Peay Vineyards Scallop Shelf Estate Pinot Noir 2021 is a beautifully composed estate-grown Pinot Noir from Sonoma’s cool coastal hills, crafted from a selection of 5-6 clones grown on the winery’s own vineyard. Winemakers Nick Peay and Vanessa Wong have created a wine of real finesse and balance, with an inviting darker-fruited profile that shows both precision and depth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it offers a graceful Pinot Noir presence with layered intensity rather than weight. The nose opens with dark cherries, plums, blood orange, forest floor, boysenberries, and a subtle thread of tobacco, giving it a complex and slightly earthy character. The palate brings red cherries, ripe plums, blackberries, cranberries, and a hint of licorice, all wrapped in a silky, refined structure. There is real personality here, with freshness and concentration working in harmony. Already very enjoyable, it also has the balance and complexity to develop further over the next few years.

The wine is made from 5-6 Pinot Noir clones selected from the estate vineyard, allowing the producers to build complexity and nuance from a single site. Careful vinification emphasizes purity, texture, and the distinctive character of the vintage.

This Pinot Noir is an excellent match for roast duck, herb-crusted pork, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, or earthy dishes featuring truffles and wild mushrooms. Serve it slightly cool, ideally around 15-17°C, and consider a short decant if opened young to let the aromatics fully unfold.
