Description

Pavillon Rouge 2001 is the second wine of Château Margaux, one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates, offering a more approachable expression of Margaux’s elegance and finesse. From a celebrated vintage, it brings the refinement of the château’s style in a wine that is often more accessible earlier than the Grand Vin.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a graceful garnet to brick-red hue, reflecting its maturity. The bouquet is expected to unfold with classic Left Bank character: ripe blackcurrant, plum, cedar, tobacco, graphite, and subtle floral notes, with secondary aromas of leather and earth developing with age. On the palate, it should be medium-bodied and polished, with supple tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, measured finish. While fully enjoyable now, this 2001 has likely reached a lovely stage of evolution and can still hold its shape for further short-term cellaring if stored well.

Production
Produced in Margaux, Bordeaux, Pavillon Rouge benefits from the same exceptional terroir as Château Margaux, with well-drained gravel soils that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon-led blends. As the estate’s second wine, it is made from carefully selected lots that do not make the final cut for the Grand Vin, ensuring a high standard of quality and a style that reflects the château’s house character.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck breast, grilled beef, venison, and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles. Serve at around 16–18°C and decant for 1–2 hours if opening now, especially to allow the mature aromas to open fully.

Producer
Pavillon Rouge is the second label of Château Margaux, a First Growth estate with a long and distinguished history in the Médoc. The château is renowned worldwide for producing wines of extraordinary elegance, precision, and longevity, and Pavillon Rouge has become an important wine in its own right for offering a more accessible entry into this iconic estate’s style.
