Description

Paul Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle 1989 is one of the great references of the Rhône Valley, sourced from some of the finest Syrah parcels in Hermitage. Built on old vines, tiny yields, and a legendary terroir above the little Saint-Christophe chapel, it captures both the power and finesse that have made La Chapelle an icon for decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a brilliant ruby-red color with impressive depth and clarity. The bouquet is already beautifully complex, opening with dark berries such as blackberry, blackcurrant, and blueberry, layered with spice and a subtle touch of oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated, and richly fruited, with a layered structure and firm, well-integrated tannins. The finish is long and persistent, suggesting excellent aging capacity and continued evolution over time.

Production
La Chapelle is made from Syrah grapes sourced from some of Hermitage’s most prized vineyard sites, including Les Bressards, Les Greffieux, Le Méal, and Les Rocoules. The vines are generally 40 to 60 years old, and yields are extremely low at just 10–18 hl/ha, ensuring remarkable concentration. Each parcel is harvested by hand and transported in small 20 kg crates to protect the fruit from oxidation. After destemming and gentle crushing, the wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging for 15–18 months in oak barrels, with around 20% new wood, in the historic VINEUM cellars.

Food & Serving
This is a superb partner for game, pheasant, ox tournedos, veal sweetbreads, and other richly flavored meat dishes. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting the wine for an hour or more if possible to allow its full aromatic range to unfold.

Producer
Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the most respected historic producers in the Rhône Valley, long associated with exceptional Hermitage wines. La Chapelle has become the estate’s most famous wine, admired for its depth, balance, and expression of Hermitage terroir, and it remains one of the region’s benchmark bottlings.
