Description
Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle Hermitage 2020 in Salmanazar format (9L) is a collector’s centerpiece from one of the Rhône Valley’s most storied vineyards. Sourced from the legendary slopes of Hermitage, this pure Syrah captures the dark-fruited, mineral backbone that has made La Chapelle a benchmark for Northern Rhône wines. Bottled in an impressive large format, it promises both spectacle on the table and a graceful, steady evolution in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 La Chapelle shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is layered and nuanced rather than showy: notes of cedar shavings and pencil lead mingle with crushed stone, dark plum, and black cherry, supported by hints of mocha, damp earth, and black olive tapenade.
On the palate, this is full-bodied but not overpowering, with a sleek, open-knit texture. Dark plum and blackberry fruit are laced with savory tones of graphite, cocoa, and dried herbs. The tannins are fine yet present, and the acidity keeps the wine balanced rather than heavy. While it may not be the most powerful or dense recent vintage of La Chapelle, it offers approachability and clarity of flavor, making it enjoyable relatively early in its life. In a Salmanazar, the slower evolution of the large format should extend its drinking window, allowing it to age gracefully for 15–25 years under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
La Chapelle is drawn from some of Hermitage’s most revered granite terraces, where Syrah vines cling to steep, sun-drenched slopes overlooking the Rhône. The combination of poor, stony soils, strong diurnal shifts, and meticulous vineyard work yields small, concentrated berries. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection on the steep vineyards, then carefully sorted before vinification. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels, often with a mix of stainless steel and concrete to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. Maturation follows in French oak, with a judicious use of new barrels, aiming to frame—rather than dominate—the wine’s natural structure and its mineral, savory profile.
Food & Serving
This Hermitage is a natural partner for robust, savory dishes: think roasted or grilled lamb with rosemary, beef ribeye, duck breast with black olives, game birds, or slow-braised short ribs. It also works beautifully with mushroom dishes, truffle-inflected cuisine, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show both fruit and complexity. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended if opened in the near term, especially from a large format, to allow the wine to open and the more earthy, mineral nuances to emerge.
Producer
Founded in 1834, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the historic great names of the Rhône Valley and a reference point for Hermitage. The estate built its international reputation largely on La Chapelle, named after the iconic chapel that crowns the Hermitage hill and symbolises the appellation. Under the stewardship of the Frey family in recent decades, quality has been rigorously elevated through lower yields, organic and biodynamic practices, and precision in the cellar. Today, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is regarded as a benchmark producer in the Northern Rhône, with La Chapelle consistently ranked among the region’s most collectible and ageworthy Syrahs.
