Description
Bottled in a spectacular 15L Nebuchadnezzar, Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle Hermitage 2020 is a striking expression of one of the Rhône Valley’s most storied wines. Sourced from the legendary slopes of Hermitage and blending several of the hill’s finest lieux-dits, it offers the depth and gravitas collectors expect from La Chapelle, in a format made for grand occasions. While the 2020 is more approachable and less brooding than some surrounding vintages, it retains the house’s hallmark refinement and terroir detail. La Chapelle owes its name to the historic chapel of Saint-Christophe that crowns the Hermitage hill, and vintages like 1961 have long cemented its place in fine wine history. This 2020 continues that lineage with a more open-knit, early-drinking profile that will delight those who appreciate a classic northern Rhône Syrah without needing to wait decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 La Chapelle Hermitage shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple core that clings to the sides of the glass, hinting at concentration despite its more graceful style. The nose opens with an elegant cedar-like lift, followed by aromas of crushed stones and pencil shavings that frame dark, plummy fruit. Notes of mocha, damp earth and black olive tapenade add a savory complexity, giving the wine a distinctly Hermitage character.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet not heavy, with smooth, polished tannins and a more open, accessible texture than the monumental 2019. Ripe black plum and blackberry are interwoven with hints of cocoa, graphite, dried herbs and a subtle gamey nuance, all carried by a well-judged acidity that keeps the wine fresh rather than ponderous. The finish is long but not explosive, emphasizing elegance over sheer power, with a gentle, savory persistence. In this 15L Nebuchadnezzar, the wine’s evolution will be significantly slower than in standard bottles; expect a comfortable drinking window from the mid-term onward, with peak enjoyment likely over 12–25 years from the vintage, depending on how much youthful fruit versus secondary nuance you prefer.
Production
La Chapelle is drawn from some of Hermitage’s most revered granite terraces, including parcels on Les Bessards, Le Méal and other prime slopes that together define the appellation’s complex personality. The vineyards sit on steep, sun-drenched exposures overlooking the Rhône river, with poor, stony soils of decomposed granite and alluvial deposits that naturally limit yields and concentrate the Syrah. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing for a rigorous selection of bunches in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification usually involves traditional destemmed Syrah, fermented in temperature-controlled tanks with gentle extraction to respect structure without over-extracting tannin. The wine is then aged, most often for around 15–18 months, primarily in French oak barrels and larger casks, with a careful balance of used and a modest proportion of new oak to add texture and subtle spice while allowing the terroir of Hermitage to remain front and center.
Food & Serving
This 2020 La Chapelle Hermitage in Nebuchadnezzar is tailor-made for the table, particularly with richly flavored, savory dishes. It will shine alongside roast lamb studded with garlic and herbs, slow-braised beef or venison, grilled ribeye, duck breast with a dark berry reduction, or earthy dishes built around wild mushrooms, lentils and truffle. Aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or mature Cheddar also make a superb match. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F); given the large format and the wine’s youthful structure, a long, gentle decant of 2–4 hours (or more for very youthful bottles) is recommended to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl and the palate to knit together, especially when serving at large gatherings.
Producer
Founded in 1834, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the historic houses of the Rhône Valley and a name virtually synonymous with Hermitage. Over nearly two centuries, the estate has helped define the global reputation of Hermitage, with La Chapelle achieving near-mythic status thanks to benchmark vintages like 1961, 1978 and 1990. Since the acquisition by the Frey family in 2006, significant investments in vineyard management and cellar practice have focused on precision, lower yields and increasingly organic and biodynamic methods, further elevating quality. Today, Paul Jaboulet Aîné stands as a reference-point producer in the northern Rhône, crafting wines that combine depth and age-worthiness with a refined, terroir-driven style that collectors and sommeliers around the world seek out year after year.
