Tasting Notes

The nose is complex and nuanced rather than overtly opulent: notes of cedar shavings, crushed stones and pencil lead frame a core of dark plum and black cherry, layered with mocha, earthy undertones and a distinctly Rhône-like savoriness of black olives and dried herbs. On the palate, it is full-bodied but not massive, with more finesse than sheer power. The fruit leans towards dark plum and blackcurrant, wrapped in fine-grained tannins and supported by a vein of graphite-like minerality. The mid-palate is supple and open, making it more accessible in its youth than some more muscular Hermitage vintages, while the finish, though slightly less driven and energetic than the very greatest La Chapelles, is long, savory and gently smoky. In this 6-liter Imperial format, the wine’s aging curve will be significantly extended; expect a drinking window of 15–25 years from vintage, with the wine entering a particularly harmonious phase roughly 8–10 years after harvest.

Production
La Chapelle is sourced from some of the most revered parcels on the granitic slopes of Hermitage hill in the northern Rhône, notably sectors such as Les Bessards and adjacent sites, renowned for their poor, stony soils and exceptional sun exposure. These steep terraces, with their mix of granite, stones and clay, naturally limit yields and impart the hallmark crushed-rock minerality and structure to the Syrah. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to ensure both concentration and freshness, then meticulously sorted. Vinification typically involves temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel or concrete, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, with a portion of new wood used to add subtle spice and structure without overwhelming the terroir expression. The 2020 was crafted to balance ripe fruit, aromatic complexity and elegance rather than sheer density, resulting in a wine of poise and clarity.

Food & Serving
This 2020 La Chapelle Hermitage pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes that echo its earthy, dark-fruited character: think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, beef ribeye or côte de boeuf, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or game such as venison with wild mushrooms. It also works superbly with slow-braised dishes like short ribs or daube de boeuf, and with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to preserve aromatics and balance; in its youth, decanting for 1.5–2 hours will help the wine unwind and integrate its cedar, mineral and mocha notes. As it develops with age, especially in this large Imperial format, a gentle 45–60 minute decant should be sufficient to remove sediment and allow the bouquet to fully blossom.
