Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Chapelle 2020 presents a deep, opaque ruby core with a subtle violet rim, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is layered and complex, opening with notes of cedar wood and pencil shavings over a dark, plummy fruit core. Crushed stones and graphite underline its Hermitage terroir, while shades of mocha, earth, black olives and a touch of dried herbs add complexity as it aerates. On the palate, this is full-bodied yet not overwhelmingly dense, with ripe dark berry and plum fruit wrapped in fine-grained tannins. There’s a savory edge of tapenade, cocoa and earthy spice that balances the fruit, and a distinctly stony, mineral line that runs through the mid-palate. Compared with more monumental vintages of La Chapelle, the 2020 feels more open-knit and less driven, making it accessible relatively early. It should offer its best drinking over the medium term—approximately 10–15 years from the vintage—rather than requiring decades of cellaring.

Production
La Chapelle is sourced from some of Hermitage’s most revered parcels on the hill, including sites with steep, sun-drenched granitic slopes that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The old Syrah vines dig deep into poor, stony soils, contributing to the wine’s hallmark graphite and crushed rock character. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve balance and purity of fruit. In the cellar, traditional Rhône methods prevail: careful sorting, temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration to extract color and fine tannins, followed by maturation in French oak barrels. The wood regimen is calibrated to support, rather than mask, the terroir character—adding subtle cedar, mocha and spice without overwhelming the dark fruit and mineral backbone.

Food & Serving
This vintage of La Chapelle pairs beautifully with refined yet hearty dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, slow-braised beef cheeks, duck with black olives, or game birds in red wine jus. It also works well alongside truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragout, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Tomme. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and texture. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to help the wine open and soften the tannins; as it develops a few years in bottle, a shorter decant will be sufficient to remove sediment and awaken the bouquet.
