Description

Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle Hermitage 2019 in magnum format is a benchmark Northern Rhône Syrah, sourced from one of the most storied hillsides in the wine world. This is a powerful, cellar‑worthy red that marries depth, structure and finesse, already thrilling but with decades of evolution ahead. La Chapelle takes its name from the small hillside chapel overlooking the Hermitage vineyard, and since the mid‑20th century it has been a reference point for collectors seeking the very best from the Rhône.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Chapelle Hermitage is intensely deep and opaque, with a dark garnet core fading to a narrow, youthful rim. The nose is layered and complex, opening with aromas of roasted meats, mocha, and crushed stone, followed by ripe black plum, blackcurrant, and a subtle floral lift of violet and dried herbs. Hints of smoked bacon, graphite, and warm spices emerge with air, underlining its profound Hermitage character. On the palate, this is full-bodied, concentrated and powerful, yet remarkably polished in texture. Dense black fruit—plum, cassis and blackberry—interweaves with notes of cocoa, espresso, and savory game, supported by firm, ripe tannins that are plentiful but velvety. The finish is long and intricate, echoing with crushed black pepper, salted liquorice, and mineral notes that linger for minutes. While already impressive, the structure and depth suggest outstanding aging potential; in magnum, this 2019 should comfortably evolve and improve over 15–30 years, gaining complexity, tertiary nuances and even greater harmony.

Production
La Chapelle is drawn from several of Hermitage’s greatest terroirs, including the famed parcels around the chapel itself, combining steep granitic slopes with patches of limestone and alluvial soils that give both power and finesse to 100% Syrah. Vines here cling to dramatic south-facing terraces, benefiting from intense sunlight, cooling Rhône breezes and naturally low yields. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery to retain only the finest fruit. Vinification typically involves traditional fermentation with careful temperature control and regular pigeage or remontage to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—often with a judicious proportion of new oak—for extended maturation, allowing the bold structure of Hermitage Syrah to integrate and the distinctive savory, spicy and mineral nuances of the terroir to fully express themselves.

Food & Serving
This 2019 La Chapelle Hermitage is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef or venison, duck with blackcurrant or cherry, and game birds with wild mushrooms. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar, and deeply flavored dishes with truffle, lentils or root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both aromatics and structure. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended—especially in magnum—to allow the wine to open and soften; for bottles with some age, a gentler 1–2 hour decant is usually sufficient, mainly to let the bouquet unfurl.

Producer
Founded in 1834, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the historic names of the Rhône Valley and a key architect of Hermitage’s global reputation. La Chapelle became a legend in the 20th century, particularly after the celebrated 1961 vintage, and remains one of the region’s most sought‑after wines. Under the stewardship of the Frey family since 2006, the estate has invested heavily in vineyard work and quality‑driven winemaking, emphasizing sustainable and organic practices. Today, Paul Jaboulet Aîné stands as a benchmark producer in the Northern Rhône, with La Chapelle recognized as one of the world’s great expressions of Syrah and a cornerstone of any serious Rhône collection.
