Description

Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle Hermitage 2016 in magnum is one of the Rhône Valley’s benchmark Syrahs, drawn from the steep, granite terraces of the legendary Hermitage hill. This is a powerful yet supremely refined wine that captures the essence of its terroir in a deep, structured and beautifully layered expression. Bottled in 1.5L, it offers both immediate pleasure and exceptional aging potential, making it a centerpiece for any serious cellar.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 La Chapelle Hermitage shows a deep, opaque ruby core with violet highlights that hint at its youth and concentration. The nose is intensely expressive, unfolding with aromas of black olive tapenade, grilled and smoked meats, cracked black pepper and crushed dark berries, all wrapped in notes of graphite, dried herbs and a touch of violets. On the palate, this is full-bodied and dense yet remarkably refined, with a creamy, velvety texture that glides rather than attacks. Dark plum, blackcurrant and blackberry fruit sit beneath a distinctly savory, spicy profile, with layers of leather, licorice, smoked game, and warm spices emerging as it opens in the glass. The granite backbone is evident in its firm but polished tannins and vibrant mineral line, giving the wine both tension and length. The finish is long, silky and persistent, more about spice, earth and umami than overt sweetness of fruit. In magnum, the 2016 has the structure to evolve gracefully through 2040 and beyond, gaining even more complexity and tertiary notes with time.

Production
La Chapelle Hermitage is sourced from some of Hermitage’s most emblematic, granite-rich parcels on the western side of the hill, including sectors such as Les Bessards, which are renowned for producing Syrah of great depth and minerality. The vines cling to steep, south-facing terraces where poor, stony soils and a continental climate with Rhône Valley winds naturally limit yields and drive concentration. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, sorted meticulously, and vinified parcel by parcel to preserve their individual character. Fermentation traditionally takes place in temperature-controlled vats with gentle extraction to balance power and finesse, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a proportion new, the rest seasoned) to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the purity of fruit and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This is a natural match for rich, savory dishes such as roast or grilled lamb, dry-aged ribeye, slow-braised beef cheeks, venison, game birds, and dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles or black olives. It also pairs beautifully with robust stews, cassoulet, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C, allowing the magnum to come slowly up from cellar temperature. Decanting is recommended—at least 2 hours in advance for current drinking—to allow the wine to fully unfurl its aromatic complexity and to soften the tannins, especially in its youth.

Producer
Founded in 1834, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the historic great houses of the Rhône, synonymous with the Hermitage hill and legendary bottlings of La Chapelle. Named after the small chapel that overlooks the vineyards, La Chapelle became an icon of French wine in the 20th century, producing some of the region’s most celebrated vintages. Today, under the stewardship of the Frey family and winemaker Caroline Frey, the estate has focused strongly on vineyard health and precision in the cellar, elevating quality across the range. Jaboulet remains a reference point in the Northern Rhône, with La Chapelle Hermitage standing as one of the appellation’s most sought-after and ageworthy expressions of Syrah.
