Description
Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle Hermitage 2015 in Double Magnum (3L) is a collector’s format of one of the Rhône Valley’s most iconic Syrah wines. From the legendary slopes of Hermitage, this vintage is renowned for its depth, structure and remarkable aging potential. Bottled in large format, it is designed to evolve slowly and gracefully, making it an exceptional choice for the cellar or a truly memorable table centerpiece.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 La Chapelle Hermitage shows a deep, opaque ruby to nearly inky purple hue, reflecting its concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered, with classic Hermitage aromas of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and black cherry, intertwined with notes of black olives, smoked meat, espresso, pencil shavings, crushed stone and a touch of graphite and spice.
On the palate it is full-bodied, richly concentrated and powerful, framed by firm, tightly knit tannins that speak clearly to its long life ahead. The dark fruit core is supported by savory nuances of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, tapenade and a subtle smokiness, all carried on a long, persistent finish with a distinctly mineral edge. In this 3L format, the wine will age even more slowly than a standard bottle; it is best approached from around 2030 and can easily evolve for two to three decades or more under proper cellaring.
Production
La Chapelle is sourced from some of Hermitage’s finest and steepest granite terraces, where old-vine Syrah digs deep into mineral-rich soils overlooking the Rhône River. The 2015 vintage enjoyed excellent growing conditions, allowing for optimal ripeness while preserving balance and structure. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates to preserve berry integrity, then carefully sorted before vinification. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, often with a period of extended maceration to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a proportion of new oak, for many months to refine its tannins and build the signature texture and complexity that define La Chapelle.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, structured Hermitage that shines alongside equally refined and flavorful dishes. Think slow-braised lamb shanks, roasted venison, ribeye or côte de boeuf, duck with black olives, rich game stews, or earthy dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles and root vegetables. Mature hard cheeses, such as aged Comté or Beaufort, also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and aromatics. Given its youth and structure, decanting is strongly recommended—at least 2–3 hours for current drinking, and still an hour or more even as it gains bottle age, especially in this 3L format.
Producer
Founded in 1834, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the great historic names of the Rhône Valley and a benchmark for Hermitage. La Chapelle, named after the small chapel that crowns the Hermitage hill, has achieved near-mythical status, particularly with legendary vintages that helped cement the region’s global reputation for world-class Syrah. Under modern stewardship and renewed focus on vineyard quality and terroir expression, the estate has reasserted itself as a reference point in the Northern Rhône, consistently producing ageworthy, complex wines that speak clearly of their origin.
