Description

Paul Jaboulet Aîné La Chapelle Hermitage 2015 is a benchmark Northern Rhône Syrah from one of the most storied single vineyards in France. Sourced from the fabled slopes of Hermitage, this cuvée is renowned for its depth, longevity, and classical structure. The 2015 vintage is already hailed as one of the estate’s finest in recent decades, capturing both the power of the year and the refined, aristocratic character that has made La Chapelle a legend since the mid-20th century.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 La Chapelle is deep, opaque ruby with a youthful purple rim that hints at its long life ahead. The nose is intensely aromatic and layered: blackcurrants and ripe blackberries unfold alongside notes of black olives, smoked meat, espresso, graphite, pencil shavings, and crushed stone. Subtle hints of violets, dried herbs, and a touch of woodsmoke add further complexity as the wine opens. On the palate, this is a rich, concentrated, and full-bodied Hermitage with firm, tightly knit tannins that speak to serious aging potential. Flavors echo the nose—dense black fruit, cassis, and plum—interwoven with savory nuances of tapenade, roasted coffee, charcoal, and a distinctly mineral backbone. The finish is long, precise, and persistent, carrying notes of spice, smoke, and dark chocolate. While already impressive, the wine is still reserved and coiled; it will benefit greatly from time in the cellar, with optimal drinking likely over the next 15–30 years, and the best bottles easily stretching beyond that.

Production
La Chapelle is drawn from some of Hermitage’s most revered south-facing granitic slopes overlooking the Rhône, where poor, stony soils and steep terraces naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The 2015 growing season in the Northern Rhône was warm and dry, yielding perfectly ripe Syrah with excellent phenolic maturity and balanced structure. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates, allowing for rigorous selection in both vineyard and cellar. Vinification is traditional yet precise: the fruit is destemmed or partially destemmed depending on parcel and vintage, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation and a long maceration to extract color, tannin, and aromatic complexity. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, for an extended period to refine the tannins and integrate the oak, while preserving the distinctive mineral expression of Hermitage.

Food & Serving
This powerful Hermitage pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes such as slow-braised lamb shank, roast venison, game birds, beef short ribs, or dry-aged ribeye. Earthy accompaniments—wild mushrooms, truffles, lentils, and root vegetables—highlight the wine’s smoky, mineral and herbal dimensions, while aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Manchego make for a classic end to the meal. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). If opened in its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the tannins to soften and the aromatics to fully unfurl; mature bottles can be decanted gently 30–60 minutes before serving to remove sediment and let the wine breathe.

Producer
Founded in 1834, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the historic houses of the Rhône Valley and a name synonymous with Hermitage. La Chapelle, named after the small chapel of Saint-Christophe that overlooks the hill, achieved international fame in the 20th century with legendary vintages such as 1961 and 1978, cementing its status as one of the world’s great Syrahs. Since the Frey family took over in 2006, extensive investments in the vineyards and cellar have further elevated quality, restoring La Chapelle to its iconic position at the top of the Northern Rhône hierarchy. The 2015 vintage stands as a modern classic, showcasing the estate’s commitment to precision, terroir expression, and ageworthy, elegant wines.
