Description
Paul Jaboulet Aîné’s Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert 2012 is a classic Northern Rhône Syrah that combines old-vine intensity with remarkable finesse. Sourced from one of the appellation’s most historic single vineyards, it delivers depth, complexity and a true sense of place at a highly compelling level. This cuvée has long been considered a benchmark for Crozes-Hermitage, showcasing how serious and ageworthy the wines from this terroir can be.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Domaine de Thalabert displays a deep, dark ruby colour with violet reflections, hinting at its concentration and Syrah character. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with ripe blackcurrants and blackberries, followed by peppery herbs, leather, black olives and a subtle note of scorched earth. Hints of smoked meat, dried violets and a touch of graphite add further complexity as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, juicy and beautifully balanced, with a core of dark fruit framed by refined tannins and fresh acidity. Flavours of cassis, blackberry and plum are intertwined with cracked black pepper, savoury herbs, tapenade and a faint smokiness from the oak. The 12 months of aging in French barrels (around 20% new) add gentle spice and structure without overwhelming the fruit. Still showing vibrancy, this vintage was built to age gracefully, and while already drinking well, bottles cellared carefully can continue to develop tertiary notes—leather, game and forest floor—through to around 2023 and beyond, depending on storage.
Production
Domaine de Thalabert is sourced from some of the oldest Syrah vines in Crozes-Hermitage, rooted in stony alluvial soils rich in pebbles and clay on the terraces near the Rhône River. This classic Northern Rhône terroir provides excellent drainage and heat retention, promoting healthy ripening while preserving freshness and aromatic lift. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to allow for strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification is traditional: the Syrah is destemmed (with potential inclusion of a small proportion of whole clusters depending on the vintage), followed by a temperature-controlled fermentation to extract colour, aroma and fine tannins. The wine then ages for about 12 months in French oak barrels, roughly 20% of which are new, the rest seasoned, to soften the structure and add subtle complexity rather than overt oak flavour.
Food & Serving
This Crozes-Hermitage pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled red meats—think lamb chops with rosemary, beef ribeye, duck breast, or game dishes such as venison or wild boar. It also complements hearty stews, braised short ribs, slow-cooked lamb shanks, and rustic dishes featuring lentils, mushrooms or black olives. Mature hard cheeses like aged Comté, Cantal or a well-aged cheddar are excellent partners as well. Serve at 16–18°C (slightly cool room temperature) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially while the wine is still relatively youthful, to allow the bouquet to fully express itself and to soften the tannins.
Producer
Founded in 1834, Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the historic houses of the Rhône Valley and a reference name in the Northern Rhône. Based in Tain-l’Hermitage, the estate built its reputation on legendary wines from Hermitage, particularly La Chapelle, and has played a major role in elevating the region’s global prestige. Domaine de Thalabert, owned by Jaboulet since the early 20th century, is widely recognized as one of the first and finest single-vineyard expressions of Crozes-Hermitage. Under the stewardship of the Frey family since 2006, investment in vineyard health, lower yields and increasingly meticulous winemaking has reaffirmed Jaboulet’s position as a leading producer, consistently crafting wines that combine regional typicity with elegance and aging potential.
