Description

Pascal Agrapart Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Vénus 2018 is a Brut Nature Champagne of striking purity and precision, drawn entirely from a single, old-vine parcel in Avize. Crafted without dosage and disgorged in August 2024, it showcases the chalk-rich terroir of the Côte des Blancs in its most unadorned, transparent form. Vénus has become one of Agrapart’s most sought-after cuvées, celebrated for its refined texture, mineral intensity, and its role in defining the modern grower-Champagne movement.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vénus 2018 is pale lemon with a fine, persistent mousse and a delicate, silvery rim – visually signaling its tension and finesse. The nose unfolds slowly and gracefully, opening with floral notes of honeysuckle, followed by fresh pear, subtle citrus, and a touch of green apple. Underneath lie deeper tones of fresh hazelnut, crushed chalk, and a faint maritime hint of iodine, all contributing to a highly detailed aromatic profile. On the palate, this is a harmoniously balanced, intensely chalk-driven Champagne with bright, crystalline acidity and a finely etched, almost salty mineral line. The oak élevage in old 600-liter barrels brings texture rather than overt wood flavor, giving a gentle creaminess that never dulls the wine’s precision. Flavors of pear, lemon zest, and white stone fruit are interlaced with toasted nut nuances and a lingering, mouthwatering saline finish. More elegant and refined than the 2017 edition, the 2018 Vénus is already compelling but will reward patient cellaring; it should evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity while preserving its core of freshness.

Production
Vénus comes exclusively from La Fosse aux Pourceaux, a tiny 0.6-hectare plot in the Grand Cru village of Avize, planted in 1959 on classic, deeply chalky soils of the Côte des Blancs. This vineyard is uniquely worked by hand and with a horse, avoiding heavy machinery to preserve soil health, root depth, and biodiversity. The Chardonnay is harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then vinified and matured in old 600-liter oak barrels, which lend texture and complexity without imparting overt oak flavors. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, and the wine undergoes extended aging on its lees before being bottled for a long second fermentation and maturation in the cellar. Disgorged in August 2024 with no dosage, it is released as a true Brut Nature expression of site, season, and grape.

Food & Serving
This focused, mineral Blanc de Blancs is a superb match for pristine seafood and refined, subtly flavored dishes. Think oysters, scallop carpaccio, turbot with beurre blanc, sashimi, or simple grilled langoustines, as well as delicate cheeses such as young goat’s cheese or a lightly aged Comté. Serve well chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatic layers and texture to fully emerge. A brief 20–30 minutes in a decanter or in the glass as it warms gently from the fridge will help Vénus unfold its floral, nutty, and saline nuances.

Producer
Pascal Agrapart is one of the benchmark grower-producers in Champagne, based in the Grand Cru village of Avize in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. Founded in the late 19th century and elevated to its current renown under Pascal’s stewardship, the domaine is known for its hands-on vineyard work, old-vine Chardonnay holdings, and a philosophy that prizes terroir clarity over manipulation. Working parcel by parcel, Agrapart has become a reference for mineral-driven, low-dosage Champagnes that express the nuances of Avize and its neighboring crus with remarkable precision. Cuvées like Vénus, Minéral, and Avizoise have solidified the estate’s reputation among collectors and sommeliers as some of the finest and most authentic expressions of Chardonnay in the region.
