Paolo Manzone Barolo Meriame 2021 is a compelling expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most respected crus, offering a modern yet unmistakably Piedmontese character. Sourced from the historic Meriame site in Serralunga d’Alba, it combines the depth and structure of classic Barolo with a more approachable, polished style shaped by careful élevage in both large Slavonian oak and French tonneaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Barolo typically shows a bright garnet hue with the telltale transparency of Nebbiolo. The nose is layered and refined, opening with red cherry, wild berries, rose petal, and violet, followed by earthy, savoury notes, subtle spice, and a hint of oak-derived warmth. On the palate, it is structured and focused, with firm tannins, fresh acidity, and a core of red fruit balanced by mineral, earthy complexity. The Meriame cru lends a slightly rustic, grounded edge, while the oak ageing adds polish and length. This is a wine with strong ageing potential and will reward patience over the next decade or more.

Production
The Meriame cru lies in Serralunga d’Alba, at the heart of the Barolo DOCG, where old Nebbiolo vines — some up to 70 years of age — grow in a site known for producing wines of depth and personality. The vineyard’s character leans toward a more direct, earthy expression, and Paolo Manzone works with a modern sensibility inspired by Burgundy. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 24 months of ageing in wood, with at least half in large 1,500-litre Slavonian oak casks and the rest in French tonneaux, around 30% of which are new.

Food & Serving
Barolo Meriame 2021 is an excellent match for richly flavoured dishes such as braised beef, truffle risotto, roasted game, mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least one to two hours to help soften the tannins and open up the wine’s aromatic complexity.

Paolo Manzone is a family-run winery with roots dating back to 1948, based in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most important communes. The estate has earned recognition for crafting Barolo in a refined, contemporary style that still respects the power and structure of the region. By combining old vines, traditional Barolo terroir, and thoughtful barrel ageing, Manzone has established itself as a producer to watch in Piemonte.
