Ornellaia 2023

Ornellaia is one of Tuscany’s most iconic Super Tuscans, celebrated for its luxurious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. From the Bolgheri coast, it combines concentration, finesse, and a distinctly expressive oak signature that has made it a benchmark in modern Italian fine wine.

Tasting Notes
Deep in colour with a dense, polished appearance, Ornellaia shows layers of dark berries, blackberry, sweet spice, cinnamon, and subtle cocoa. The 2023 vintage is expected to carry the estate’s hallmark balance of ripe fruit, refined structure, and seamlessly integrated oak, with Petit Verdot contributing lift, length, and a touch of additional depth on the finish. On the palate, it should be rich and full-bodied, with generous fruit weight framed by elegant, fine-grained tannins. The wine is built for aging and will likely reward patience over the next decade or more, developing greater complexity and nuance as the fruit softens and tertiary notes emerge.

Production
Fruit is sourced from multiple parcels across the Ornellaia estate in Bolgheri, where the Mediterranean climate and coastal influences help preserve freshness while fully ripening the grapes. The vines are largely mature, with many planted in the 1980s, and the final blend is assembled only after extensive tasting and evaluation of a large number of individual lots. The wine is then aged for 18 months in oak, with a high proportion of new barrels selected from a range of coopers, toast levels, and forest origins to shape the wine’s signature style.

Food & Serving
Ornellaia pairs beautifully with premium dishes such as grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, roast lamb, venison, or truffle risotto. Serve at 16–18°C and, if possible, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics to open and the structure to soften.
