Opus One, Napa Valley Overture 2022

Opus One Overture is the approachable counterpart to the estate’s flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, offering the same Napa Valley pedigree in a supple, expressive style. Created by Opus One to showcase the character of its vineyards in a wine ready to enjoy earlier, it reflects the Bordeaux-inspired vision established by Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi in 1978.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, Overture opens with inviting aromas of ripe blackberries, black cherries and plums, complemented by notes of violet, cedar, vanilla and subtle spice. The palate is generous and polished, with succulent dark-fruit flavours, smooth tannins and well-integrated oak. A fresh line of acidity keeps the wine balanced, while the rounded texture gives it immediate appeal. Although designed for earlier enjoyment than Opus One, Overture can develop gracefully over the next several years when stored in a cool, dark environment. The 2022 bottling is particularly well suited to drinking now after a brief period of aeration.

Production
Produced from selected grapes grown in Opus One’s Napa Valley vineyards, Overture is a Bordeaux-style red blend built around classic varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified parcel by parcel before the lots are blended to achieve balance, fragrance and approachability. As with Overture’s traditional style, the wine places emphasis on fruit expression, supple texture and harmonious oak rather than the more structured, long-term profile of the flagship Opus One.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C with grilled or roasted beef, lamb, venison, mushroom dishes or rich vegetable preparations. Its supple fruit and polished tannins also make it a natural match for burgers, braised short ribs and mature hard cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but 30–60 minutes in a decanter will help open the wine’s aromas and soften its texture further.

Opus One was founded in 1978 as a pioneering partnership between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild. Based in Oakville, Napa Valley, the winery became one of California’s most internationally recognised producers, combining Napa fruit with the elegance and discipline of Bordeaux winemaking. Overture extends that distinctive Opus One style into a more accessible wine, offering a graceful expression of the estate’s vineyards and winemaking philosophy.
