Opus One, Napa Valley 2022

Opus One 2022 is a prestigious Napa Valley red wine born from the historic partnership between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Combining the structure of Bordeaux with the richness of California, it is crafted as a refined, age-worthy expression of Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon and its traditional blending partners.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, opaque ruby colour with striking violet hues. Its nose is layered and expressive, revealing blackcurrant, blackberry and plum alongside cedar, graphite, dark chocolate and subtle floral notes. With time in the glass, hints of spice and finely integrated oak emerge. On the palate, the 2022 vintage is full-bodied yet balanced, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours, polished tannins and a fresh mineral character. Notes of cassis, black cherry, cocoa and savoury spice lead to a long, precise finish. While approachable with decanting, its structure and concentration suggest excellent ageing potential over the next 15–25 years, depending on storage conditions.

Production
Produced in Napa Valley’s Oakville district, Opus One benefits from a warm, dry climate moderated by cooling influences, as well as well-drained volcanic and alluvial soils. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then matured in French oak, allowing the Bordeaux-inspired blend to develop greater complexity, texture and integration while preserving the character of the fruit.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth. Its depth and structure make it an excellent match for prime rib, roast beef, venison, lamb, truffle dishes and richly flavoured hard cheeses. For a more classic pairing, serve alongside a simply seasoned steak to highlight the wine’s cassis fruit and savoury depth.
