Description
Opus One is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic red wines, born from the landmark partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton-Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Since its debut, it has stood as a benchmark for combining Bordeaux-inspired structure with the ripeness and power of California Cabernet.
Tasting Notes
Opus One 2021 is typically deep ruby to nearly opaque in the glass, with impressive concentration and polish. The nose unfolds with layers of blackcurrant, dark cherry, plum, violet, cedar, graphite, cocoa, and subtle baking spice, supported by refined oak and mineral accents.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and seamlessly structured, with ripe tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, composed finish. The blend’s classic Bordeaux varieties add complexity and balance to the Cabernet Sauvignon core, giving the wine both immediacy and the promise of excellent aging. The 2021 vintage should develop beautifully over many years, gaining nuance and savory depth with cellaring.
Production
Opus One is sourced from prime vineyard sites in Napa Valley, with the estate in Oakville at the heart of one of the region’s most esteemed terroirs. The vineyards benefit from warm, sun-filled days and cooling influences that help preserve freshness and tannin finesse, while the wine is crafted as a Bordeaux-style blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels and then matured for a further 15 months in bottle before release.
Food & Serving
This is a wine for classic, richly flavored dishes such as grilled ribeye, filet mignon, lamb saddle, braised short ribs, or truffle-infused mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C for the best balance of aroma and structure, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open fully.
Producer
Opus One was founded in 1980 as a collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, two giants of the wine world whose shared vision was to create an extraordinary Napa Valley red in the style of Bordeaux. The first vintages were originally released under the name ‘Napamédoc,’ reflecting the union of Napa and Médoc, before the project adopted the Opus One name. Today, the estate is one of California’s most recognized cult wineries and a symbol of luxury, craftsmanship, and international prestige.
