Opus One 2017

Opus One 2017 is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic Bordeaux-style blends, created through the legendary partnership of Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Crafted with remarkable precision, it combines power, elegance, and a deeply polished modern style that has made it a benchmark for California’s finest red wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 vintage shows a medium to deep garnet-purple color. The nose unfolds slowly, revealing layers of baked black cherries, mulberries, black raspberries, warm cassis, and blackberry pie, lifted by notes of spice cake, yeast extract, tapenade, licorice, dusty soil, and a touch of wild sage. The palate is medium-bodied, vibrant, and beautifully composed, with juicy raspberry and cassis-driven fruit, a refreshing line of acidity, and ripe, plush tannins. It finishes long, graceful, and harmonious, with the balance and structure to develop further over time; this is a wine with excellent aging potential.

Production
The fruit comes from four distinctive parcels in the Oakville district of Napa Valley, a terroir especially well suited to Bordeaux varieties. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted both in the vineyard and again in the cellar after destemming. Fermentation includes 18 days of skin contact, followed by 18 months of aging in new French oak barrels and a traditional fining with fresh egg whites before bottling.

Food & Serving
Opus One 2017 pairs beautifully with dishes such as beef tenderloin, roast lamb, duck breast, grilled ribeye, or rich mushroom-based preparations. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours to allow the wine’s aromatics and structure to fully open.

Opus One was born from a historic meeting between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi in 1970, leading to the first vintage being made nine years later. First released commercially in 1982, when the 1979 and 1980 vintages were launched together, it quickly achieved cult status and remains one of California’s most celebrated wines. Today, Opus One is recognized as one of Napa Valley’s most prestigious producers, with recent vintages earning exceptional critical acclaim.
