Ojai Vineyard Syrah Roll Ranch 2012

Ojai Vineyard’s 2012 Roll Ranch Syrah is a vibrant, site-driven Central Coast red that shows the finesse and intensity for which Adam Tolmach is known. A small addition of Viognier lifts the aromatics, while a restrained use of new French oak keeps the wine polished and focused rather than heavy.

Tasting Notes
Deep and expressive in the glass, the wine opens with dark cherry, plum, and a hint of apricot, giving way to a layered aromatic profile of sweet cassis, blackberry, chocolate, mulled spice, and a touch of savory underbrush. On the palate it is ripe and textured, with a firm structure that frames the fruit beautifully; as the finish unfolds, mocha, allspice, and sage emerge and linger with impressive length. It has the balance and harmony to develop gracefully over the next decade.

Production
Roll Ranch Syrah is sourced from cool-climate vineyards in California’s Santa Barbara region, where the marine influence helps preserve freshness, balance, and aromatic detail. The 2012 vintage is composed primarily of Syrah, complemented by 2% Viognier, and was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, including 13% new oak. Adam Tolmach’s approach favors early picking, careful vineyard selection, and minimal intervention in the cellar, with an emphasis on purity, low sulfur use, and no filtration.

Food & Serving
This Syrah pairs well with grilled lamb, roast duck, braised short ribs, venison, or mushroom-based dishes, especially those with herbs like sage and thyme. Serve at around 16–18°C; decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended if drinking now, as it will help the wine open fully and soften its structure.

Ojai Vineyard was founded by Adam Tolmach, who established the winery after working alongside Jim Clendenen at Au Bon Climat and later followed his own path in Ojai and Santa Barbara County. Since the early 1980s, Tolmach has been a pioneer in the region, known for his thoughtful vineyard sourcing, commitment to quality, and gradual move toward organic farming and low-intervention winemaking.
