Description

Oddero Barolo DOCG 2021 is a Nebbiolo from Piedmont with cherry and violet over rose, truffle and tobacco shaped by large-cask ageing and a lasting finish. Oddero's 2021 has the house's quiet large-cask stamp, with red cherry moving into tobacco and dried rose. This is Barolo for a decanter and a proper meal.

About the Wine
The 2021 Oddero Barolo DOCG starts with biodynamically certified Nebbiolo in the Barolo district. The soils named for this bottle are limestone, clay and Tortonian marl, and the wine carries that in a dry mineral grip under the fruit. Oddero's home in La Morra shows in the lifted rose and violet notes. The 2021 also keeps a stern tannic frame that points to long-lived Barolo. The cherry fruit stays red-toned and bright, with a cool sour edge. In the cellar, Oddero follows the traditional Barolo path for this DOCG wine. The wine sees a minimum of 38 months of total ageing, including at least 18 months in large Slavonian oak botti grandi. That long élevage leaves the oak feeling savoury and integrated. The 2021 is dry at 14.5% alcohol, and the cask tone reads as old tobacco and cedar dust under the rose. The final texture feels polished by time in wood, with Nebbiolo tannin running the line. A dry cherry note returns after the tobacco.

Tasting Notes
The nose opens with ripe red cherry and violet, then adds dried rose, truffle and leaf tobacco after a few minutes in a large glass; the note feels very Oddero in its slow unfurling. Oddero's 2021 is dry and full in feel, with 14.5% alcohol carrying sour cherry, orange peel and a savoury undergrowth note across the middle. Large Slavonian cask ageing sits in the background as cedar dust and old tobacco, and the fruit stays red-toned through the centre of the palate. The tannins are velvety at the edge and firm through the centre, giving the 2021 that Oddero feeling of measured grip, slow release and serious cellar promise for a young Barolo from this house. Drink 2026-2041.

Food Pairing
Pour the Oddero Barolo DOCG 2021 with red meat that has real browning, such as ribeye on the bone or slow-roasted beef shin; the wine's cherry-skin tannin grabs the crust and the tobacco note follows the pan juices. A Piedmontese brasato al Barolo is the regional match, especially with a spoonful of its dark cooking sauce and a little polenta. Tajarin with shaved white truffle also makes sense, as the wine already carries that earthy truffle echo under the rose. For game, choose venison loin with juniper or hare ragù over fresh pasta, then finish with aged Castelmagno or another firm mountain cheese.

Producer
Oddero is based in Santa Maria, a hamlet of La Morra, and that address matters when you taste the floral register and fine tannic grain of the Oddero Barolo DOCG 2021. The family name sits among the older labels of the denomination and the estate has built its reputation through vineyard names, patient Nebbiolo and large casks across several generations of growers. Its range includes cru Barolo from Brunate and Vigna Rionda, so this DOCG bottling stands beside wines tied to some of the most watched slopes in the Langhe and followed by drinkers who know those names. The concrete trait to notice here is the use of large casks for the main Barolo language, which gives this 2021 tobacco depth and polished edges with a slow savoury release. Oddero is the Barolo producer I reach for when I want the conversation to start quietly and then stay detailed through a meal of beef, mushrooms and old cheese, with the glass changing every ten minutes. In this bottle the details are especially clear: rose petal at first pour, cherry skin after air, and that earthy truffle note that makes the wine feel tied to autumn in Piedmont after a slow decant at the table today.
