Description
Oddero Barolo 2021 is a Nebbiolo from Piedmont with cherry, violet and truffle notes, shaped by limestone, clay and long Slavonian oak aging in Barolo. It feels serious from the first smell. The fruit lands in the dark cherry register. The old-school botti aging gives breadth, spice and a quiet grip. Decant it and give the glass time.
About the Wine
Oddero Barolo 2021 comes from Nebbiolo grown in the Barolo district of Piedmont, where the estate works under sustainable certification. The soils named for this release are limestone, clay and Tortonian sandy marl, a mix that gives the 2021 its red-fruited core and firm mineral line. Nebbiolo here carries the floral lift that Oddero handles so well, with violet notes sitting above cherry and clean earth. The 14.5% alcohol reads through ripe skin, warm cherry and a broad mid-palate, and the dry profile keeps the fruit in a savoury register. The sandy marl detail shows in the scent, where truffle and dried flower appear before darker spice.
In the cellar, Oddero keeps this Barolo on a traditional path. The wine matures in large Slavonian oak casks, known as botti, for roughly 24 to 30 months before bottle aging. That long stay in large wood marks the 2021 with old-cask spice, gentle balsamic warmth and a polished texture. Bottle aging follows, so the release enters the market with its tannic edges already beginning to knit. The élevage is visible in cherry skin, dried violet and the first earthy suggestion of truffle from the provided tasting profile. The final wine is dry, deep ruby and built around layered tannins, with a long line of clay-dark grip. The last impression is cherry skin caught against earthy Barolo perfume.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass, the 2021 Oddero Barolo gives an immediate scent of ripe cherry, pressed violet and damp autumn earth. A truffle note appears after a few minutes, folded into the Nebbiolo perfume and touched by old cellar spice. On the palate the wine carries dry cherry flesh, orange peel and liquorice root, then a savoury tone like fresh-dug clay after rain. The tannins are silky at the edge and serious through the centre, giving the 2021 a long shape that matches its 24 to 30 months in large Slavonian botti. Air brings out rose petal, tarry spice and a darker cherry skin note, and the finish holds a persistent Barolo grip that feels set for a slow life in bottle; best from 2026 to 2040.
Food Pairing
Pour Oddero Barolo 2021 with beef braised in wine, especially brasato al Barolo from Piedmont, where the sauce echoes the wine’s cherry and truffle tones. Roast venison with juniper is another strong choice, as the game flavour meets the wine’s dry tannin and earthy depth. Grilled ribeye with rosemary and coarse salt is direct enough for the 2021 tannins, and the char brings out its darker cherry skin note. For a regional table, serve tajarin with porcini and veal ragù, then let the violet and old-cask spice lift the pasta’s richness. Aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano Reggiano also suits this bottle, with salt and granular texture drawing out the long finish after the meat has gone.
Producer
Oddero is one of the old La Morra names, based in the hamlet of Santa Maria and tied to estate bottling since the late nineteenth century, long before many local families placed their own names on Barolo. The concrete thread to follow here is the producer’s loyalty to large Slavonian botti for Barolo, a choice you see directly in the stated 24 to 30 months of aging for this 2021 release. Those casks leave a trace that feels like old cellar spice, dried cherry skin and a quiet balsamic note, all gathered around the violet scent that Nebbiolo brings from these Barolo hills. The family also bottles named Barolo sites such as Brunate and Vigna Rionda, so this classic Barolo sits in a range where cru detail and estate blending share the same tasting table during a serious Oddero tasting. In this bottle the broader blend reads through limestone with clay and Tortonian sandy marl as red fruit, dry earth and a tannic line polished by time in cask, then tightened by bottle age for this exact 2021 bottling. The producer’s hand is easiest to spot after ten minutes in the glass, when cherry turns toward truffle and the finish keeps that firm La Morra poise wrapped in old wood spice and dry rose.
