Description
Neumeister Sauvignon Blanc Alte Reben 2015 is a profound, ageworthy white from the volcanic hills of Styria in southern Austria. Sourced from old-vine Sauvignon Blanc parcels, it showcases remarkable depth, tension and minerality that place it among the most serious expressions of the grape in Europe. Awarded an outstanding 97 points by Wein-Plus, this wine has already earned a reputation as a modern benchmark for Styrian Sauvignon.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Alte Reben shows a luminous straw to pale gold hue, hinting at both concentration and development. The nose is cool, taut and layered, with restrained aromas of yellow stone fruit and citrus interwoven with smoky, flinty notes, a subtle hint of cured bacon, mushrooms, fine herbs and delicate floral tones. There is a distinct impression of wet stone and chalky, shell-like minerality running through the bouquet.
On the palate, this is firmly structured and tightly wound, with a dense yet linear core of fruit that leans more toward the savory, herbal and mineral spectrum than overt ripeness. Flint, gun smoke and crushed rock sit alongside cool yellow fruit, with prominent leesy (yeasty) complexity and a chalky, salty, almost seashell character. The acidity is precise and finely etched, and there is notable grip from perfectly ripe phenolics, giving the wine impressive texture and persistence. Still far from fully developed, it carries enormous tension yet a sense of inner calm, suggesting a long life ahead. Properly stored, this vintage has outstanding aging potential and will continue to unfold over at least 10–15 years from vintage, if not longer.
Production
The Sauvignon Blanc Alte Reben grapes come from Neumeister’s oldest vineyards in Styria’s rolling, steep hills around Straden, an area shaped by ancient volcanic soils, limestone and clay. This combination, together with the region’s cool climate and marked diurnal shifts, fosters slow ripening and intense aromatic complexity while preserving acidity. The old vines are typically low-yielding and deeply rooted, translating the nuances of the terroir into the glass with exceptional clarity. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal physiological ripeness, carefully sorted, and gently pressed. Fermentation is usually carried out with native yeasts, often in large neutral oak or traditional casks, followed by extended aging on the lees to build texture, depth and subtle smoky, flinty notes. The result is an uncompromising, terroir-driven Sauvignon that is built to age.
Food & Serving
This structured, mineral-driven Sauvignon Blanc pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes such as grilled or roasted white fish, shellfish (especially scallops, langoustines and oysters), and delicately prepared poultry. It is superb with vegetable-based cuisine and alpine or Mediterranean flavors: think fennel, asparagus, artichokes (rare for wine pairings, but this has the structure), wild herbs, soft to semi-hard cheeses, and mushroom dishes. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) in a large white wine glass to allow the aromatics to open gradually. Given its youthfulness and concentration, decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially in the next few years, to help unveil its depth and complexity.
Producer
Weingut Neumeister is a leading family-run estate based in Straden in the Styrian region (Steiermark) of southeastern Austria, an area increasingly celebrated for world-class Sauvignon Blanc. Over several generations, the Neumeister family has transformed their vineyards on steep, often terraced slopes into some of the most respected sites in the region, with a strong focus on sustainable and quality-focused viticulture. Their meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar has positioned them at the forefront of the so-called “New Styria,” crafting wines that combine precision, terroir expression and aging potential. Neumeister’s single-vineyard and old-vine bottlings, such as the Sauvignon Blanc Alte Reben, are frequently lauded by European critics and have helped cement Styria’s reputation as one of the great cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc regions of the world.
