Description
Neumeister Morillon Ried Moarfeitl GSTK Bio 2021 is a benchmark Styrian Chardonnay from one of the estate’s oldest and most prized vineyards. As a GSTK (Grosse STK Ried) site, Moarfeitl sits at the very top of the regional quality pyramid, comparable to Germany’s Grosse Lage classification. Organically farmed and meticulously crafted, this wine captures the cool-climate elegance and distinctive character of Steiermark’s finest Morillon.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a clear, bright straw-yellow color with subtle green reflections, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is immediately inviting and layered rather than dominated by oak: delicate stone fruit and citrus peel are interwoven with fine, spicy and slightly sweet nuances. You may find notes of ripe pear, yellow apple and lemon zest alongside hints of star anise, Darjeeling tea, dried herbs and a touch of floral lift.
On the palate, the Morillon is precise yet generous, with a gentle creaminess and light lees-driven ‘Schmelz’ that never weighs it down. Fresh acidity and a mineral backbone drive the wine, giving it tension and length while the fruit remains finely etched—think citrus, white peach and a faint saline edge. The oak is perfectly integrated, contributing texture and structure rather than overt flavor. This 2021 vintage is already beautifully balanced but built for development; with its concentration, acidity and careful élevage, it should evolve gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining complexity, nuttier tones and more pronounced tertiary spice.
Production
Ried Moarfeitl is a high-plateau vineyard in Steiermark, one of the oldest parcels in the Neumeister family’s possession, and classified at the top STK level (GSTK). The site is characterized by calcareous sand and clay soils that give the Chardonnay (locally called Morillon) both tension and depth, combining mineral precision with textural richness. Farmed organically (Bio), the vines have been rooted here since 1990, benefiting from cool nights and a long growing season that preserves acidity and aromatic finesse. After careful, selective hand harvesting, the grapes undergo about 12 hours of skin contact before fermentation in small oak barrels. The wine then matures for 18 months in larger and used wooden casks, allowing it to gain complexity and harmony without overt new oak influence, before being bottled with minimal intervention to express the terroir as purely as possible.
Food & Serving
This Morillon is a superb partner for refined, subtly rich dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry (such as corn-fed chicken or guinea fowl), veal in cream-based sauces, freshwater fish like trout or char, and elegant seafood preparations, especially scallops or lobster with butter and herbs. It also works well with alpine cheeses, mushroom risottos and dishes featuring fennel or root vegetables. Serve at 10–12 °C to allow the aromatics to unfold without losing freshness. A short decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more of its spice, tea notes and layered texture.
