Nervi-Conterno Vigna Molsino Gattinara 2018 in magnum format is a powerful yet chiselled expression of Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo. From a warm, sun-exposed amphitheatre at 400 metres altitude, it marries dark, brooding fruit with riveting freshness and precision. This inaugural vintage under Roberto Conterno’s guidance has already drawn comparisons to Monfortino, signalling an ambitious new benchmark for Gattinara.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Molsino shows a deep garnet hue with vibrant, translucent edges, typical of top Nebbiolo yet clearly concentrated. The nose is intensely layered: ripe dark cherry and plum intertwine with notes of sage, menthol, liquorice, fresh leather and crushed violets, underpinned by hints of tar, smoke and dark spices. On the palate, the wine is potent, virile and tightly coiled, with a core of dark red and black fruits driven by a vibrant line of acidity. Fine yet authoritative tannins provide serious grip and structure, gradually unfurling into a long, resonant finish with savoury mineral tension and echoes of herbs and spice. In magnum, this Gattinara has remarkable aging potential; it is already compelling, but will develop greater complexity and tertiary nuance over 15–25 years, with the larger format extending its evolution even further.

Production
Vigna Molsino is a historic, south- to southwest-facing cru in Gattinara, shaped like a natural amphitheatre and lying around 350–420 metres above sea level. The soils are rich in porphyritic volcanic rock and minerals, lending the wine its signature tension, savoury depth and refined tannins. Nebbiolo (locally known as Spanna) is hand-harvested parcel by parcel to ensure optimal ripeness and selection. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a traditional, long maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by extended aging in large neutral oak botti, allowing the wine to develop slowly while preserving purity of fruit, transparency of terroir and a classic, structured Gattinara profile.

Food & Serving
This 2018 Vigna Molsino is a brilliant match for rich, savoury dishes such as braised veal shank (ossobuco), slow-cooked lamb, game birds, truffle risotto, mushroom tagliatelle, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C to showcase its aromatic detail and balance. Given its youth and structure—especially in magnum—decant for 2–3 hours before serving to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its layered complexity.

Producer
Nervi is the oldest documented winery in Gattinara, with roots reaching back to the early 20th century, and has long been regarded as a reference for the appellation. In 2018, the estate entered a new chapter when it was acquired by Roberto Conterno of the legendary Barolo producer Giacomo Conterno, and rebranded as Nervi-Conterno. Under his stewardship, meticulous vineyard work, rigorous selection and a deeply traditional yet perfectionist approach in the cellar have elevated Nervi-Conterno to one of the leading lights of Alto Piemonte. The single-vineyard wines, particularly Vigna Molsino, are now seen as standard-bearers for the region, with critics hailing them as some of the most exciting and ageworthy Nebbiolos produced outside Barolo and Barbaresco.
