Description
Muri-Gries Lagrein Alto Adige 2022 is a dry Lagrein from Bolzano with blackberry and violet, cocoa spice shaped by large Slavonian oak and Gries soils. It has the dark fruit of Lagrein with the calm polish Muri-Gries gives its cask-aged reds. Open it when a mountain red should feel serious and generous.
About the Wine
The 2022 Muri-Gries Lagrein Alto Adige comes from Lagrein grown in the Bolzano district, close to the abbey in the Gries quarter. The soils mix gravel and clay, and this bottle carries dark fruit with a stony edge on the finish. Muri-Gries farms under a sustainable certification, and Lagrein is the red grape most closely tied to its Bolzano identity. The 2022 growing season has given this dry red a ripe blackberry core and a violet note that stays clear in the glass. At 13.5% alcohol, it has enough weight for the grape's darker side.
In the cellar, this Muri-Gries Lagrein spends 18 to 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks. That choice is important here: the wine shows cocoa and baking spice with a dry cask tone. The tannins have a rounded feel, and the fruit stays in a deep register. The ageing time also marks this as a more serious expression than a simple young Lagrein from the same hills. The finished wine sits in a deep ruby register and carries the quiet spice of the Slavonian cask.
Tasting Notes
The glass is deep ruby with a darker core that fits this Bolzano Lagrein from Muri-Gries and the first scent is crushed blackberry with skins and seeds. Violet follows the fruit and gives the nose a cool floral line, then cocoa and baking spices build the warmer side of the 18 to 24 month cask ageing. On the palate, the 2022 feels powerful and velvety, with tannins already knit into the wine and a texture that recalls dark plum skin. A mineral note runs under the blackberry and cocoa, and the finish is long with a fine savoury spice that points back to the large Slavonian casks. Drink 2024-2032.
Food Pairing
Pour Muri-Gries Lagrein Alto Adige 2022 with South Tyrolean venison goulash, especially a version with juniper berries and soft speck dumplings beside the bowl. That regional dish picks up the wine's dark berry side and leaves room for its violet scent over the savoury broth and browned meat. Grilled ribeye with rosemary potatoes is a strong second choice, especially if the steak has a charred edge that meets the wine's cocoa and baking spice. Braised beef cheeks in red wine also make sense here, as the glossy sauce mirrors the Lagrein's deep fruit and the tannins refresh each bite. For cheese, choose aged Stelvio or Asiago with nutty edges and a firm texture that echoes the dry spice from the Slavonian casks.
Producer
Muri-Gries is unusual in Alto Adige: the winery sits inside a Benedictine abbey in the Gries quarter of Bolzano at city level, surrounded by streets, courtyards and the daily life of the city near the historic heart of Lagrein. The community of Benedictine monks from Muri in Switzerland settled at Gries in the nineteenth century after leaving their Swiss home, and the winery still carries both place names in Muri-Gries on every bottle, on the front label and in the spoken shorthand of the estate. That name points to a real cellar address in Bolzano and it gives this 2022 Lagrein a sharper origin than the broad Alto Adige wording on the appellation line; the address is specific when you pour the wine beside bottles from higher Alpine villages. Lagrein has a special place in the range here with dark reds that receive time in cask across several levels of ambition and show the grape through violet, blackberry and cocoa with attention that many white-led Alto Adige estates reserve for Pinot Bianco or Sauvignon. The producer's choice of large Slavonian casks is an old-fashioned detail in the best sense, and after 18 to 24 months it frames this bottle with dry spice, rounded tannin and a polished texture. Sustainable certification adds another concrete marker for Muri-Gries today, and in this wine it sits alongside traditional cask ageing, gravel-clay Bolzano fruit and the deep ruby colour seen in the 2022.
