Description
Müller-Catoir’s Pfalz Herzog Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese 2023 is a rare, intensely sweet German dessert wine made from Rieslaner grapes harvested at exceptional ripeness. The Trockenbeerenauslese designation indicates individually selected, shrivelled berries—often shaped by noble rot—resulting in remarkable concentration, freshness and ageing potential. Rieslaner, a crossing particularly associated with Franconia and the Pfalz, is prized for its vibrant acidity and suitability for richly expressive sweet wines.
Tasting Notes
Bright golden to amber in appearance, this wine offers a concentrated bouquet of candied citrus, ripe peach, apricot and honey, with hints of dried fruit, spice and botrytis complexity. On the palate, it is lusciously sweet and dense, yet defined by Rieslaner’s incisive acidity. Flavours of orange marmalade, tropical fruit, saffron and honey are balanced by a long, vibrant finish. With its high concentration and acidity, the wine should develop beautifully over many years, gaining further notes of caramel, dried fruit and spice with bottle age.
Production
The wine comes from the Pfalz and the Herzog vineyard, where warm, sun-exposed conditions help Rieslaner achieve exceptional ripeness while the region’s diurnal variation supports freshness. For Trockenbeerenauslese, only highly concentrated, shrivelled grapes—often affected by noble rot—are selected by hand in several careful passes. Gentle pressing and slow fermentation preserve the wine’s aromatic intensity, natural sweetness and balancing acidity.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C in small dessert-wine glasses. It is a natural match for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, cheesecake, blue cheese and foie gras, while its acidity also complements spicy Asian cuisine. Decanting is generally not necessary, although a brief opening before serving can allow its aromas to unfold; older bottles may benefit from careful decanting to remove sediment.
Producer
Müller-Catoir is one of the Pfalz’s historic and most respected estates, based in Neustadt-Haardt and with a winemaking history dating back to the 18th century. The estate is recognised for elegant, site-focused wines that combine the Pfalz’s ripe fruit with precise acidity and restraint. Its sweet wines, particularly those made from aromatic varieties and noble-rot-affected fruit, demonstrate the estate’s ability to produce wines of both concentration and remarkable longevity.
