Description
Mouton Rothschild 2022 is a powerful, cellar‑worthy Pauillac that captures the drama and intensity of this Bordeaux vintage. Muscular, deeply structured and almost brooding in its youth, it showcases the château’s signature opulence wrapped in serious tannic architecture. Crafted from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot, and representing just 49% of the estate’s production, this is a monumental grand vin designed for long-term aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Mouton Rothschild 2022 shows a dense, almost opaque purple-black core with a vibrant, inky rim that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose is sumptuous yet tightly coiled at first, gradually opening to layers of dark berries, ripe plum and sweet crème de cassis, interwoven with notes of espresso, pencil shavings and a faint, polished, almost petroleum-like nuance that adds intrigue and complexity.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, richly textured and intensely concentrated, with a core of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum framed by massive but refined tannins. The mid-palate is compact and powerful, with dark chocolate, roasted coffee bean and graphite notes that echo the nose. The finish is long, authoritative and firmly structured, clearly signaling its destiny as a long-distance runner. While already impressive, this 2022 is built for the cellar and will reward patience over decades, gradually shedding its youthful muscle in favor of greater nuance, polish and aromatic complexity.
Production
Château Mouton Rothschild lies on the gravelly terraces of Pauillac in Bordeaux, where deep gravel over limestone and clay provides ideal drainage and encourages Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional ripeness and intensity. The 2022 grand vin is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot, sourced from some of the estate’s finest parcels. Grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the best fruit makes it into the final blend. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, allowing precise extraction of color, tannin and aroma. The wine is then aged in a high proportion of new French oak barriques, where it develops its signature combination of power, polish and aromatic complexity before bottling at the château.
Food & Serving
Mouton Rothschild 2022 is best paired with richly flavored, protein‑driven dishes that can stand up to its structure: classic roast lamb with herbs, dry‑aged ribeye, venison or other game, and dishes with earthy components like wild mushrooms or truffle. It also works beautifully with well-aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic depth without emphasizing the tannins. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to allow the wine to unfurl; as it matures, a shorter, gentle decant to remove sediment will suffice.
Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates and a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Pauillac, officially elevated to First Growth status in 1973 after decades of persistence by Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The property’s deep gravel soils have long been recognized as exceptional for Cabernet Sauvignon, and Mouton has become synonymous with powerful, opulent and age‑worthy wines. Beyond its viticultural pedigree, the château is renowned for commissioning original artwork for each vintage’s label, creating a unique intersection of fine wine and fine art. Mouton Rothschild stands as a benchmark of the Médoc, consistently producing some of the most sought‑after wines in the world and playing a defining role in the prestige of Bordeaux on the global stage.
