Description
Château Mouton Rothschild 1993 is a distinguished Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most iconic First Growth estates. It offers the classic structure and depth associated with the property, with the added intrigue of a mature vintage from a historic producer whose labels and wines have helped define modern Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine typically shows a deep garnet core with some evolution at the rim, reflecting its maturity. The nose is likely to be more reserved and complex than exuberant, with notes of cedar, tobacco, blackcurrant, dried plum, graphite, leather, and subtle earthy spice emerging with aeration.
On the palate, it should present the firm Pauillac frame the château is known for: structured tannins, measured concentration, and a long, savory finish. With age, the fruit shifts toward dried and tertiary nuances, while the wine retains a sense of elegance and minerality. This is a vintage best appreciated for its complexity and balance rather than sheer power, and it can still hold well for those who enjoy mature claret.
Production
Mouton Rothschild is based in Pauillac on the left bank of Bordeaux, where gravelly soils and excellent drainage favor Cabernet Sauvignon-driven wines with precision and backbone. As with most great Bordeaux reds of the Médoc, careful vineyard selection and parcel-by-parcel harvesting are central to maintaining quality, followed by traditional vinification and élevage in oak to build structure, complexity, and longevity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or game birds, as well as mushroom-based dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes if the bottle is showing signs of reduction or sediment; however, older bottles should be handled gently and tasted before extended aeration.
Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s legendary estates and a benchmark name in Pauillac. Elevated to First Growth status in 1973, it is renowned not only for the quality and longevity of its wines, but also for its celebrated artist-designed labels, which have become an enduring part of its identity and global reputation.
