Description

Mouton Rothschild 1998 in magnum (1.5 L) is a benchmark Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most iconic First Growth estates. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, it captures the classic power and elegance of left-bank Bordeaux in a beautifully maturing phase. Offered in large format, this bottle is ideal for collectors and for truly special occasions where depth, complexity and longevity are essential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1998 Mouton Rothschild shows a deep garnet-red colour with a slightly brickish rim, reflecting its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is wonderfully expressive, revealing layers of crème de cassis, dried roses and hoisin, interwoven with baking spices, dried cherries, mulberries, a touch of woodsmoke, incense and forest floor. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, packed with rich, refined dark fruit framed by firm, chewy yet polished tannins. Complex tertiary flavours—dried red and black berries, tobacco leaf, cedar, spice box and earthy nuances—unfold gradually, while the finish is incredibly long with persistent, perfumed notes. At this stage, the 1998 offers that prized balance between mature tertiary character and still-vibrant fruit. In magnum, it remains remarkably youthful and, according to winemaker Philippe Dhalluin, can easily continue to age gracefully for another 20–25+ years if well cellared.

Production
This 1998 Mouton Rothschild is sourced from the estate’s prime vineyards in Pauillac, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide perfect drainage and heat retention for Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with meticulous sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters are selected. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, where each plot is fermented separately before blending to achieve Mouton’s signature style. The wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barriques, predominantly new, which adds structure, spice and complexity while allowing the terroir and the classic Cabernet-led blend to shine through over extended maturation.

Food & Serving
This mature Pauillac is a superb partner for refined dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, venison, slow-braised short ribs, or classic French preparations like duck with truffle jus and mushroom fricassée. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 17–18°C (62–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity and texture. Given its age and structure, decanting is highly recommended—around three hours, as suggested by Philippe Dhalluin—to fully open the bouquet, soften the tannins and allow any sediment to settle.

Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most renowned First Growth estates, located in Pauillac and owned by the Rothschild family since the mid-19th century. Elevated to First Growth status in 1973, it is famous not only for the power, opulence and longevity of its Cabernet Sauvignon–based wines, but also for its tradition of commissioning original artwork for each vintage’s label from world-famous artists. Mouton has played a key role in establishing Pauillac as a reference point for great Cabernet-driven Bordeaux and remains a cornerstone of fine wine collections worldwide, with the late 20th-century vintages like 1998 now entering a particularly rewarding drinking window in magnum format.
