Mount Mary Vineyard, Yarra Valley Quintet 2021

Mount Mary Vineyard’s Quintet 2021 is a refined Bordeaux-style red blend from one of the Yarra Valley’s most historic estates. Made from five classic varieties—typically Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec—it combines cool-climate freshness with layered structure and impressive cellaring potential. The wine reflects Mount Mary’s pioneering role in the modern revival of premium winemaking in the Yarra Valley.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the 2021 Quintet opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, followed by notes of violet, graphite, cedar and subtle spice. On the palate, it is elegant and finely detailed, with concentrated dark fruit, savoury complexity and firm yet polished tannins. Fresh acidity brings balance and length, while carefully integrated oak adds structure without overwhelming the fruit. This is a poised, age-worthy vintage that can be enjoyed now with decanting, but should develop greater savoury and tertiary complexity over the next 15–20 years under suitable cellar conditions.

Production
The wine comes from Mount Mary’s vineyard in the cool-climate Yarra Valley, east of Melbourne in Victoria. Founded in 1971, the estate now covers approximately 40 hectares and grows 18 grape varieties. The grapes are fermented on their skins for around 12–14 days before the wine spends 22 months in oak. Approximately 25% of the blend is matured in large-format oak vessels of 1,500 litres or more, 30% in new 225-litre barriques, and the remainder in barriques aged between two and five years. Before bottling, the wine is only lightly fined and filtered.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Its combination of dark fruit, freshness and structured tannins makes it an excellent partner for roast lamb, grilled or braised beef, venison, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth, to allow its aromas and texture to open.
