Description

Mount Mary’s Quintet 2020 is a refined, Bordeaux-inspired red from one of the Yarra Valley’s pioneering family-owned estates. Made from a classic blend of five traditional Bordeaux varieties, it combines cool-climate elegance with depth, structure and remarkable cellar potential. Mount Mary was founded in 1971 and played a formative role in the modern revival of the Yarra Valley as one of Australia’s leading wine regions.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the 2020 Quintet opens with lifted aromas of blackcurrant, red plum and blackberry, complemented by cedar, graphite, dried herbs and subtle spice from oak maturation. On the palate, it is poised and finely detailed, with layers of dark fruit, savoury complexity and fresh acidity. Firm but polished tannins provide structure, while the finish is long, persistent and distinctly mineral. This is a wine built to develop in bottle. It can be enjoyed now with decanting, but should gain further complexity and silkiness over the next 10–20 years, provided it is stored in a cool, dark cellar.

Production
The fruit comes from Mount Mary’s vineyard in the Yarra Valley, east of Melbourne in Victoria, a cool-climate region well suited to Cabernet-based wines. The estate’s vines are harvested with an emphasis on quality and balance, and the grapes ferment on their skins for approximately 12–14 days. The wine then matures for 22 months in oak: around 25% in large oak vessels of 1,500 litres or more, 30% in new 225-litre barriques, and the remainder in two- to five-year-old barriques. Before bottling, the wine is fined and filtered as lightly as possible to preserve its character.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come up gradually to serving temperature. Decant for around 1–2 hours when enjoying the wine young, both to open its aromas and to soften its youthful structure. Its elegant power makes it an excellent match for roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.

Producer
Mount Mary Vineyard is a family-run estate established by John and Marli Middleton in 1971. One of the first vineyards planted during the Yarra Valley’s modern renaissance, Mount Mary has become one of the region’s most respected names. The estate now farms approximately 40 hectares with 18 grape varieties and is particularly recognised for its finely structured, age-worthy wines, including Quintet, its celebrated Bordeaux-style red blend.
