Mount Mary Vineyard’s 2021 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir is a refined expression of one of Australia’s most respected cool-climate wine regions. Founded in 1971, Mount Mary was among the pioneering vineyards responsible for the revival of the Yarra Valley as a leading wine-producing area, and this vintage reflects the estate’s focus on elegance, freshness and understated complexity.

Tasting Notes
The wine opens with inviting aromas of nougat, cranberry, strawberry and quince. On the palate, it is soft and silky, with juicy red-fruit flavours balanced by lively acidity. Fine-grained tannins provide structure and length, while a creamy finish adds depth without weighing down the wine. Its freshness and balance make it enjoyable now, though the combination of acidity and fine tannins should allow it to develop further in bottle over the coming years.

Production
Sourced from Mount Mary’s vineyard in the heart of the Yarra Valley, east of Melbourne in Victoria, this Pinot Noir benefits from the region’s cool-climate character and emphasis on freshness. The fruit undergoes a relatively short fermentation of eight to ten days, followed by 16 months of maturation in oak barrels, 25% of which are new. Minimal, or no, fining and filtration is carried out before bottling to preserve the wine’s texture and natural expression.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 14–16°C. Its bright red-fruit profile and silky texture make it a natural partner for roast duck, herb-roasted chicken, mushroom dishes, pork tenderloin and delicate charcuterie. The wine is approachable without decanting, although a brief 20–30 minute decant can help reveal additional aromatic detail, particularly when enjoyed in its youth.

Mount Mary Vineyard is a family-owned estate founded by John and Marli Middleton in 1971. Located in the heart of the Yarra Valley, it was one of the first vineyards planted during the region’s modern revival and has played an important role in establishing the Yarra Valley’s reputation for premium wines. The estate now encompasses 40 hectares of vines and grows 18 varieties, maintaining a tradition of thoughtful, low-intervention winemaking.
