Mount Mary Vineyard, Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2020

Mount Mary Vineyard’s 2020 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir is an elegant, cool-climate Australian red from one of the region’s pioneering estates. Founded in 1971, Mount Mary helped establish the modern Yarra Valley as a destination for fine wine, and this bottling reflects the estate’s restrained, terroir-driven style with vibrant fruit, refined tannins and a creamy finish.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a bright ruby-red colour. Its expressive nose combines ripe redcurrant, strawberry and quince with an attractive note of nougat. On the palate, it is exceptionally smooth and juicy, offering layers of red fruit supported by lively acidity and fine-grained tannins. A creamy, polished finish brings both length and freshness, while the wine’s balance and structure allow it to develop further in bottle over the coming years.

Production
The grapes come from Mount Mary’s vineyard in the Yarra Valley, a cool-climate region east of Melbourne in Victoria known for producing refined, aromatic Pinot Noir. Following a relatively short fermentation of 8–10 days, the wine was matured for 16 months in oak barrels, 25% of which were new. Minimal fining and filtration were used before bottling, helping preserve the wine’s natural texture and character.

Food & Serving
Serve this Pinot Noir lightly chilled at approximately 14–16°C. Its supple texture and fresh red-fruit profile make it an excellent match for roast duck, herb-roasted chicken, mushroom dishes, pork tenderloin and salmon, as well as delicately spiced vegetarian cuisine. Decanting is not essential, but a brief 20–30 minute decant can help open the aromas, particularly when enjoyed in its youth.

Mount Mary Vineyard is a family-owned estate founded by John and Marli Middleton in 1971. Located in the heart of the Yarra Valley, it was among the first wineries established during the region’s modern revival as a premium wine-producing area. The estate now encompasses 40 hectares and grows 18 grape varieties, maintaining a reputation for finely crafted, distinctive wines that express the character of the Yarra Valley.
