Description

Château Montrose 2000 is a superb Saint-Estèphe from one of Bordeaux’s most respected Second Growth estates. Built on the power and structure that define the commune, it combines classic Left Bank refinement with the concentration and longevity collectors look for in a top vintage. As a 2ème Grand Cru Classé, it carries the prestige of the 1855 Classification and the pedigree of a wine built for the long haul.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Montrose 2000 typically shows a deep garnet core with developing brick-red edges, reflecting both maturity and the wine’s considerable structure. The nose opens with blackcurrant, plum, cedar, tobacco, graphite, and earthy notes, with hints of leather, spice, and dried herbs emerging as it breathes. On the palate, it is full-bodied and authoritative, with firm but polished tannins, well-integrated oak, and the savoury, mineral backbone Saint-Estèphe is known for. Dark fruit is supported by notes of cassis, cigar box, forest floor, and subtle spice, leading to a long, layered finish. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and, in a strong vintage like 2000, can continue to evolve gracefully for many more years.

Production
Château Montrose sits on one of the finest gravelly clay-and-gravel terroirs in Saint-Estèphe, close to the Gironde estuary, where the vineyards benefit from excellent drainage and the moderating influence of the river. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard work and careful parcel selection, with harvesting carried out at optimal ripeness and vinification designed to preserve purity, structure, and depth. Fermentation is typically followed by aging in French oak barrels to build complexity and ensure the classic Montrose balance of power and finesse.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with lamb, beef tenderloin, roasted game, duck breast, and rich dishes such as braised short ribs or mushroom-based sauces. It also works well with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if opening now to allow the wine to fully express its aromatic complexity and soften its tannins.

Producer
Château Montrose is one of the flagship estates of Saint-Estèphe and has long been celebrated for producing structured, ageworthy wines of remarkable consistency. Classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it has earned a strong reputation among collectors for combining power, elegance, and longevity. Over the years, Montrose has become a benchmark for the appellation, with several vintages gaining significant critical acclaim for their depth and cellar potential.
