Montrose 2018 in magnum format is a towering example of modern Saint-Estèphe power — dense, muscular and built for the long haul. Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Montrose is deep, opaque ruby with a near-black core and vivid, youthful rim. The nose is intense and layered, opening with notes of mulberry and black cherry, followed by dark plum, cassis, dark chocolate, violets, and hints of graphite, cedar and warm spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and concentrated, with a rich, textural attack that quickly reveals a sweet, ripe core of dark fruit. The tannins are abundant, ripe and firm — polished yet decidedly powerful — giving the wine a muscular, tightly knit structure. Despite its high natural ripeness and alcohol (over 14.5%), the balance is impressive, with freshness and a long, persistent, slightly floral finish. In magnum, this vintage has excellent aging potential: it will benefit from at least 8–10 years of cellaring and can easily evolve gracefully for 25–30 years or more under proper conditions.

Production
Château Montrose lies on one of Saint-Estèphe’s finest terroirs, a deep gravel hilltop overlooking the Gironde estuary, with gravel, sand and clay subsoils that favor Cabernet Sauvignon and lend both power and freshness. The estate is typically planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Grapes are hand-harvested in small batches, with strict sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit makes it into the grand vin. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, allowing precise extraction of color, tannin and aromatics. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new) for around 18 months, with careful racking and blending to craft a structured yet refined expression of the vintage and terroir.

Food & Serving
This substantial Montrose is ideal with rich, protein-driven dishes that can match its tannic framework and intensity: classic roast or grilled ribeye, côte de boeuf, lamb rack with rosemary, game dishes, or slow-braised short ribs and veal shank. It also works beautifully with truffle dishes, earthy mushroom preparations and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); if opened in the next decade, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the structure to soften and the bouquet to fully open. For bottles enjoyed at full maturity, a gentle 60–90 minute decant is usually sufficient, primarily to remove sediment.
