Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Montrose is deep, opaque ruby with a nearly black core and vibrant purple reflections along the rim—an immediate clue to its intensity and youth. The nose is generous and layered, opening with ripe mulberries, black cherries and cassis, followed by dark chocolate shavings, violets, graphite, crushed stone and a hint of cigar box. With air, notes of licorice and warm spices slowly unfold, adding complexity and depth. On the palate, this is full-bodied, broad and firmly structured, with a dense, muscular core of dark fruit. Flavors of blackcurrant, black cherry and plum are wrapped in cocoa, violet and subtle pencil-lead minerality, all supported by ripe yet distinctly grippy tannins. Production
Château Montrose lies on the gravelly slopes of Saint-Estèphe, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, overlooking the Gironde estuary. The terroir is classic Médoc: deep gravels mixed with clay and sand, providing excellent drainage and allowing Cabernet Sauvignon in particular to achieve great ripeness while retaining freshness and structure. Yields are typically kept low, and the grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity. In the cellar, the fruit is carefully sorted, then vinified in temperature-controlled vats to extract color, aroma and tannin with precision. The grand vin is traditionally matured in French oak barriques, a significant proportion of which are new, lending subtle spice, structure and polish to the dense fruit without overwhelming its character.
