Description
Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2020 is one of Tuscany’s most sought-after pure Sangiovese wines, combining classical elegance with striking depth. This iconic bottling is known for its dramatic evolution in the glass, revealing layers of detail rather than shouting all at once. Produced in very limited quantities, it regularly ranks among the finest wines of the vintage in the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Le Pergole Torte shows a vibrant, medium-deep ruby hue with a luminous edge that hints at its finesse and energy. The nose opens discreetly at first, then blooms into dark cherries, blackcurrant, wild berries and warm earth, interlaced with notes of iris root, dried herbs, sweet spice and a gentle floral lift.
On the palate, the wine moves with a kind of choreography: a shy, almost restrained opening, building quickly into a long crescendo of fruit, spice and mineral tension. Juicy dark cherry and blackcurrant are wrapped in fine, powdery tannins and a lovely, mouthwatering freshness that keeps the wine both kødfuld (fleshy) and refined. Hints of violet, tobacco, blood orange and subtle savory notes emerge with air, adding complexity to the long, focused finish. This 2020 has excellent aging potential; while already captivating, it will gain in nuance and silkiness over the next 10–20 years, and likely longer in a good cellar.
Production
Le Pergole Torte is sourced from high-altitude vineyards in Radda in Chianti, one of the coolest and most limestone-rich zones of Tuscany, giving the wine its pronounced freshness and precision. The Sangiovese vines are farmed with great care—largely by hand—with low yields to ensure concentration and purity of fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and traditionally vinified: fermentation takes place in cement tanks using native yeasts, followed by aging in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and smaller French barrels. This gentle, minimalist approach preserves the character of the terroir and the transparency of Sangiovese, resulting in a wine of both intensity and finesse. Total production for the 2020 vintage is around 30,000 bottles.
Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for refined Tuscan and Italian cuisine: think bistecca alla fiorentina, roast lamb with herbs, game birds, ragù-based pasta dishes, or aged pecorino and other hard cheeses. Its bright acidity and fine tannins also work beautifully with tomato-based dishes, grilled vegetables, and truffle-accented plates. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses to fully appreciate the aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to allow the wine to unfold its layers; older bottles may need only a gentle splash decant to remove sediment.
Producer
Montevertine is a legendary estate in Radda in Chianti, revered for helping define the modern image of pure Sangiovese from Tuscany. Founded in the 1960s by Sergio Manetti, the winery famously stepped away from the official Chianti Classico regulations to focus on uncompromising quality and traditional, Sangiovese-driven wines. Over the decades, Montevertine has become a reference point for the region, showcasing the elegance, aromatic clarity and age-worthiness that Sangiovese can achieve in great terroir. Le Pergole Torte, first produced in the 1970s, is the estate’s flagship wine and one of Italy’s most iconic reds, consistently earning high praise from critics and collectors worldwide.
