Description
Montes Alpha Special Cuvée Carmenère 2023 is a polished Chilean red that shows why Colchagua Valley has become a benchmark for the variety. Made from late-harvested Carmenère with small portions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it combines ripe fruit, generous structure, and a distinctly elegant oak signature.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep carmine-red color. The nose is layered and expressive, with roasted oak, chocolate, tobacco, and leather wrapped around ripe plum, cherry, blackberry, and fig syrup.
On the palate, the wine is round and balanced, with notes of black pepper, toast, and a subtle creamy character from the oak ageing. It has full body, ripe tannins, and a long, refined finish. While already generous and approachable, it should also develop nicely over the next few years.
Production
The grapes come from gently rolling slopes in Colchagua Valley, just about 25 km from the coast, where the cooler maritime influence helps Carmenère reach full phenolic ripeness while preserving aromatic complexity. Carmenère is harvested last, allowing the fruit to build concentration and depth, while the small amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc add balance and finesse. The wine is aged for 12 months, with 60% in new French oak, which contributes spice, structure, and layered complexity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with grilled beef, lamb, roasted duck, mushroom dishes, and hard aged cheeses. Serve it at 16–18°C, and decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to help the aromas open up and soften the oak presence.
Producer
Montes is one of Chile’s most influential premium wine producers, known for elevating the country’s international reputation with expressive, quality-driven wines. Founded in the late 1980s, the winery has become especially respected for its work with Carmenère and its careful use of oak and site selection. Its Alpha range remains one of the most recognized examples of Chilean fine wine on the market.
