Montes, Alpha Carmenère 2021

Montes Alpha Carmenère 2021 is a powerful, polished red wine from Chile’s renowned Colchagua Valley, showcasing the variety’s distinctive character in a modern, premium style. Made predominantly from Carmenère with a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines generous dark fruit with spice, supple tannins and refined oak. The wine reflects Montes’ pioneering role in elevating Chilean wines on the international stage.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby red in the glass, this Carmenère opens with expressive aromas of blackcurrant, plum and ripe cherry, followed by notes of pepper, cocoa and vanilla. Subtle hints of tobacco and coffee add complexity to the bouquet. The palate is full-bodied and smooth, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours, gentle smoky spice and well-integrated oak. Mature, velvety tannins provide structure without overpowering the fruit, while the long, soft finish leaves a pleasing impression of cocoa, coffee and warm spice. Enjoyable now, it should develop further over the next few years when well stored.

Production
From the warm, dry Colchagua Valley, where sunny days and cool evening breezes help Carmenère achieve ripe fruit while retaining balance and freshness. The blend is led by Carmenère, supported by a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, and is vinified to preserve the variety’s rich fruit and spicy character. Oak maturation contributes the wine’s integrated notes of vanilla, cocoa, tobacco and subtle toast without masking its generous fruit profile.

Food & Serving
A natural match for grilled or roasted beef, lamb, venison and slow-cooked dishes, it also pairs well with barbecued meats, peppered steak, hearty pasta and mature hard cheeses. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Decant for 30–60 minutes before serving to allow the dark fruit and spice notes to open fully.
