Description

Monteforte Amarone Valpolicella DOCG Clivus 2021 is a rich, velvety red that captures the opulence and depth that Amarone lovers seek. Crafted in the classic appassimento style, it delivers intense concentration, generous fruit, and a long, warming finish that’s perfect for slow evenings and special meals. As a DOCG wine from the hills of Valpolicella in Veneto, it stands as a modern expression of one of Italy’s most iconic red wine traditions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Amarone shows a deep ruby color with garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at both youth and seriousness. The nose is layered and expressive, with ripe dark cherry, dried plum, and blackberry compote wrapped in notes of dried figs, raisins, cocoa, sweet spice, and a touch of vanilla and tobacco. On the palate, it is full-bodied and plush, with a generous core of dark fruit—think black cherry, kirsch, and baked berries—supported by well-rounded tannins and a firm but balanced structure. Typical Amarone notes of dried fruit, dark chocolate, licorice, and subtle cedar linger on the long, warming finish. Despite its richness, the wine retains a fresh line of acidity that keeps it from feeling heavy. Enjoyable now with a brief aeration, it has the structure to evolve gracefully for another 8–12 years if stored well, developing more tertiary notes of leather, spice, and underbrush over time.

Production
Sourced from selected vineyards in the Valpolicella area of Veneto in northern Italy, Monteforte Amarone Valpolicella DOCG Clivus 2021 reflects a classic hillside terroir of limestone and clay soils, good drainage, and wide day–night temperature swings that help maintain aromatic complexity. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and then partially dried (appassimento) in ventilated lofts for several weeks, concentrating sugars, flavors, and tannins. After gentle pressing and a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation, the wine is matured—traditionally in large oak casks and/or barriques—to harmonize texture, integrate tannins, and layer in subtle spice, before careful blending and bottling.

Food & Serving
This Amarone is an ideal companion to rich, hearty dishes: think braised beef, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, venison stews, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano. It also works beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom risotto, and dark chocolate-based desserts for a more indulgent pairing. Serve at 18–20°C (64–68°F) in large-bowled glasses to allow the aromas to fully unfold. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and open up the complex bouquet.

Producer
This Amarone comes from a quality-focused producer in the Valpolicella area, where cooperative and family-run wineries have long pooled expertise and top vineyard sites to craft expressive, terroir-driven wines. The Clivus label typically reflects a careful selection of fruit from hillside vineyards, highlighting the balance between traditional methods—such as appassimento and aging in oak—and a clean, contemporary style. As part of the broader Veneto wine scene, the producer contributes to the region’s reputation for delivering Amarone wines with both typicity and excellent value, offering a wine that stands confidently among the classic names of Valpolicella.
