Description
Monge Granon Crémant de Die Brut is a lively sparkling wine from the dramatic slopes of the Rhône Valley, crafted in the traditional method to deliver fine bubbles and vibrant freshness. This non-vintage cuvée showcases the elegance and mineral precision that have made Crémant de Die a beloved, if somewhat under-the-radar, alternative to Champagne. With its combination of orchard fruit, citrus brightness, and a refined, dry finish, it’s ideal both as an aperitif and for festive occasions. What sets this wine apart is its high-altitude origin and its use of local varieties that thrive on the limestone-rich soils around the town of Die, giving a distinctive lift and saline edge to the wine. Crémant de Die is one of France’s historic sparkling appellations, with roots that predate many better-known regions, and Monge Granon has been instrumental in keeping this tradition alive while refining the style to modern standards of quality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Monge Granon Crémant de Die Brut shows a pale straw to light lemon hue, animated by a steady stream of fine, persistent bubbles and a delicate mousse. The nose opens with bright aromas of green apple, fresh pear, and lemon zest, layered with white flowers, a touch of stone fruit, and a faint hint of freshly baked brioche and chalky minerality.
On the palate, the wine is crisp, dry, and beautifully balanced, with a lively acidity that keeps everything taut and refreshing. Flavors of crunchy apple, citrus, and subtle peach are backed by a light creamy texture from the traditional method aging on lees, leading into a clean, mouthwatering finish with a gentle saline note. This is a sparkling wine meant to be enjoyed in its youthful vibrancy rather than cellared for extended aging, though it will hold nicely for a couple of years, gaining a bit more roundness and complexity over time.
Production
The grapes for Monge Granon Crémant de Die Brut come from the cooler, higher-altitude vineyards around the town of Die in the Rhône Valley, where limestone and clay-limestone soils impart a distinctive freshness and mineral line to the wines. The fruit is harvested relatively early, by hand where possible, to preserve natural acidity and delicate aromatics—essential for top-quality sparkling wine. In the cellar, the base wines are produced with gentle pressing and cool fermentations in stainless steel to protect purity of fruit. The traditional method (méthode traditionnelle) is then used: a secondary fermentation in bottle creates the fine bubbles, followed by a period of aging on the lees to add creaminess, subtle brioche notes, and extra complexity before riddling, disgorgement, and a carefully judged brut dosage.
Food & Serving
This Crémant de Die Brut is an excellent choice as an aperitif and pairs beautifully with a wide range of light, refined dishes. Try it with fresh oysters, prawns, and other shellfish; delicate white fish dishes; sushi and sashimi; or soft, mild cheeses like young goat cheese and bloomy-rind cheeses. It also works wonderfully with lightly salted snacks, tempura, or vegetable tarts. Serve well-chilled at about 6–8°C (43–46°F) to highlight its brightness and fine bead. Decanting is not necessary; simply open the bottle a few minutes before serving to allow the aromas to unfold in the glass.
Producer
Monge Granon is a family-driven producer with deep roots in the Die region, where generations have tended vines on the steep, sunlit slopes overlooking the Drôme Valley. Over time, the estate has become one of the reference names for Crémant de Die, helping to elevate this historic yet lesser-known appellation to the attention of sparkling wine enthusiasts beyond France. By combining traditional know-how with careful vineyard practices and a focus on freshness and precision, Monge Granon has built a reputation for delivering consistently high-quality, characterful sparkling wines that express the unique terroir of this corner of the Rhône Valley.
