Description
Mönchhof Robert Eymael’s Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Eiswein-Auslese Goldkapsel 1975 is a rare Mosel treasure, crafted from grapes that were harvested in freezing conditions to capture remarkable purity and sweetness. The result is a highly concentrated dessert wine with the elegance, balance, and longevity that have made top Mosel Rieslings so legendary.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep golden hue that hints at both age and richness. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of ripe stone fruit, honey, candied citrus, and a gentle spice note that reflects the character of Ürziger Würzgarten.
On the palate, the wine is lush and sweet, yet held in check by bright Mosel acidity, giving it a vivid, almost electric balance. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of fruit, honey, and spice. Thanks to its concentration and acidity, it still has the structure to age gracefully, though it is already in a beautifully mature drinking window.
Production
This wine comes from the steep, slate-rich slopes of Ürziger Würzgarten in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region, a site known for producing intensely aromatic Rieslings with a distinctive mineral edge. The grapes for Eiswein-Auslese are harvested only when temperatures are sufficiently low, allowing the frozen berries to be pressed while retaining their natural sugars and acidity. Vinification is done with great care to preserve the purity and precision of the fruit, resulting in a wine of impressive intensity and finesse.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed lightly chilled, ideally around 8-10°C, this wine pairs beautifully with fruit tarts, crème brûlée, blue cheese, or other rich, sweet desserts. It also works wonderfully as a contemplative aperitif or as a refined finish to a special meal. Decanting is generally not necessary, though a short aeration in the glass can help open up its aromatic complexity.
