Description
Mesa Opale Vermentino di Sardegna DOC is a refined expression of Sardinia’s native Vermentino grape, shaped by the sunny coastal conditions of Sulcis. Full-bodied yet elegant, it combines Mediterranean freshness with a distinctive mineral salinity, silky texture and a long, clean finish. Its character reflects the island’s maritime terroir and Cantina Mesa’s focus on expressive, polished Sardinian wines.
Tasting Notes
Bright and inviting in the glass, Opale offers an intense and clearly defined aromatic profile. Ripe fruit is complemented by notes of baked apple, jasmine, vanilla and English toffee, creating a layered and sophisticated nose.
On the palate, the wine is generously textured and pleasantly rounded, with a harmonious balance between freshness and mineral salinity. Its silky mouthfeel leads to a persistent, pure finish. It is particularly appealing in its youth, although its structure and lees ageing should allow it to develop gracefully over the short term.
Production
The vineyards are located in Sulcis, on the southwestern tip of Sardinia, where a warm Mediterranean climate, limited rainfall and cooling Mistral winds create ideal conditions for healthy, fully ripened grapes. The Vermentino vines are cultivated both as own-rooted bush vines and on trellises with spur pruning, in sandy, calcareous-clay soils rich in stones and minerals. Harvest takes place between the second and third weeks of September, followed by gentle pressing of whole bunches and temperature-controlled fermentation. The wine then rests on its lees for at least two months before maturing in cement tanks and undergoing a further two months of ageing to harmonise its structure and enhance its aromatic persistence.
Food & Serving
Serve chilled at approximately 8–10°C with grilled fish, shellfish, roast or grilled white meat, and flavourful pasta dishes. Its mineral character and generous texture also make it a natural partner for Mediterranean cuisine, especially dishes featuring herbs, olive oil and lightly creamy sauces. Decanting is not necessary; open shortly before serving to allow the aromas to unfold.
Producer
Cantina Mesa produces wines that express the distinctive landscape and maritime identity of Sardinia. Opale is a prestigious Vermentino di Sardegna DOC made from low-yielding vineyards in Sulcis, where bush-trained vines and calcareous-clay soils contribute to its concentration and character. The wine has received notable recognition, including 93 points from Luca Maroni and four clusters from Bibenda for the acclaimed 2024 vintage.
