Description
McManis Family Vineyards River Junction Chardonnay 2023 is a full-bodied California Chardonnay combining ripe pear and tropical fruit with a smooth vanilla undertone. Its creamy texture, subtle oak influence and long finish make it an expressive, generously styled white wine. The McManis family has cultivated grapes in California’s northern inland regions for five generations, with the winery itself established in 1990.
Tasting Notes
Bright and inviting in the glass, this Chardonnay opens with aromas of ripe pear, tropical fruits and a gentle note of vanilla. The palate is rich and creamy, with generous fruit character balanced by soft oak nuances and a lingering, rounded finish.
This is a polished wine designed to be enjoyed in its youth, when its fresh fruit and creamy texture are at their most expressive. It can be cellared for a short period, although extended aging is not necessary.
Production
The grapes are sourced from McManis Family Vineyards’ estate vineyards in California’s northern inland San Joaquin Valley, where the family carefully selects varieties and clones suited to the local soils and climate. Vineyard practices include leaf removal and cluster thinning to encourage concentration and healthy ripening. After crushing and immediate pressing, the juice is transferred to stainless-steel tanks for cold fermentation. Oak is introduced using oak staves, while maturation takes place in both new and used French and American oak barrels. A small portion undergoes malolactic fermentation, adding further texture and complexity without overwhelming the Chardonnay’s fruit character.
Food & Serving
A natural match for creamy mushroom dishes, this Chardonnay also pairs well with roast chicken, grilled fish, seafood in rich sauces and mild, creamy cheeses. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Decanting is not required, though allowing the wine to breathe briefly in the glass will help reveal its fruit and oak aromas.
Producer
McManis Family Vineyards was founded in 1990 by a family with five generations of grape-growing experience in California. Today, the estate farms approximately 2,700 hectares across ten vineyards in key areas around the San Joaquin Valley. The winery is recognised for combining large-scale production with meticulous vineyard work, including demanding practices more commonly associated with smaller producers. Its vineyards have received Green Winery certification, reflecting the family’s commitment to sustainable viticulture.
