Description
Mazzei Siepi 2020 is an iconic Super Tuscan from one of Tuscany’s historic wine families, combining the elegance and savoury character of Sangiovese with the depth and velvety texture of Merlot. First created in the 1990s, Siepi has become one of Italy’s benchmark estate wines, showcasing the modern, internationally acclaimed side of Tuscan winemaking.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in appearance, with intense aromas of ripe blackberry, black cherry and plum complemented by notes of violet, cedar, sweet spice and subtle cocoa. The palate is full-bodied and polished, offering concentrated dark-fruit flavours, well-integrated oak and firm yet refined tannins.
Fresh acidity provides balance beneath the wine’s richness, while a long, savoury finish reveals hints of tobacco, chocolate and Mediterranean herbs. Siepi 2020 is already approachable with decanting, but its structure and concentration should allow it to develop gracefully over the next 10–15 years when properly cellared.
Production
Siepi is produced at Mazzei’s Castello di Fonterutoli estate in the Chianti Classico area, where varied elevations, limestone-rich soils and a Mediterranean climate contribute both freshness and complexity. The wine is traditionally made from a balanced blend of Sangiovese and Merlot, with the grapes harvested separately at optimal ripeness. Fermentation and maceration take place parcel by parcel, followed by maturation in French oak barrels to harmonise the fruit, structure and spice before bottling.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich Tuscan cuisine, Siepi pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted beef, Florentine steak, venison and slow-cooked lamb. It also complements truffle dishes, wild boar ragù and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for approximately 1–2 hours to open the aromas and soften the youthful tannins.
Producer
The Mazzei family has been involved in Tuscan winemaking for more than six centuries and is one of Italy’s most respected historic wine producers. Based at Castello di Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti, the family is known for combining deep regional heritage with meticulous vineyard research and modern cellar techniques. Siepi reflects this approach: a prestigious estate wine that helped establish the reputation of Super Tuscan blends built around both native and international grape varieties.
