Description
From one of the Mosel’s most revered slate slopes, Maximin Grünhaus Riesling Abtsberg Spätlese 2023 captures the classic elegance and precision that have made this vineyard a benchmark for German Riesling. This is a finely balanced, fruit‑driven Spätlese that marries generous ripeness with crystalline acidity and striking minerality. Crafted from the famed Abtsberg parcel, it offers remarkable complexity now and the promise of decades of graceful evolution in bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Abtsberg Spätlese shines a pale, shimmering lemon-gold, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is intensely expressive, with layers of ripe yellow apple, pear and stone fruit wrapped in fragrant citrus zest. Underneath the fruit lie the Abtsberg signatures: delicate herbal notes reminiscent of thyme, lemon verbena and balm, along with a cool, smoky slate character.
On the palate, this Riesling is both generous and poised. Juicy, mouth‑filling fruit—ripe apple, white peach and a touch of pineapple—is lifted by a finely woven, vivid acidity that keeps the wine precise and effortlessly drinkable. Subtle floral tones and fresh herbs unfold over a backbone of salty, blue‑slate minerality. The residual sweetness is unmistakable, yet superbly integrated, lending texture and length rather than heaviness. Long, detailed and refined on the finish, this Spätlese has excellent aging potential: 10–20 years or more in a good cellar, during which it will gain honeyed, waxy and more pronounced mineral nuances.
Production
The Abtsberg vineyard is the historic heart of Maximin Grünhaus, a steep, south- to south‑east‑facing slope of blue Devonian slate with inclines up to 75%. The thin, stony soils and excellent sun exposure yield low but highly concentrated Riesling of great finesse, while the cool Mosel-Saar-Ruwer climate preserves acidity and aromatic purity. Grapes for the Spätlese are typically hand‑harvested in multiple passes (selections) to capture bunches at optimal late‑harvest ripeness, often with a portion of beautifully healthy, golden berries. In the cellar, the juice is gently pressed and fermented with natural or selected yeasts at controlled, cool temperatures in stainless steel and/or traditional large oak casks, with fermentation stopped to retain a precise balance of residual sweetness. The wine then rests on its fine lees to enhance texture and complexity before bottling.
Food & Serving
Abtsberg Spätlese is a versatile food wine that shines with both delicately spiced and richly flavored dishes. Pair it with fine Asian cuisine—such as sashimi, sushi, Thai dishes with lemongrass and lime, or lightly spiced Vietnamese salads—or with European classics like goat cheese tarts, poultry in cream sauces, veal, or pork with apple and herb accents. It also complements spicy dishes, where its fruit and sweetness offer a beautiful counterpoint to heat. Serve well‑chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). While decanting is not essential, a brief time in the glass or carafe can help the young aromas open up; for mature bottles, a gentle, short decant may help separate any sediment and allow the wine to fully express its complexity.
