Description

Maximin Grünhaus Riesling Abtsberg Großes Gewächs 2023 is a dry, top‑site Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Riesling that marries crystalline precision with real depth and power. Sourced from the famed Abtsberg vineyard, this GG bottling is crafted to express the pure slate-driven character of the Ruwer valley in a focused, ageworthy style. As a Großes Gewächs, it represents the estate’s highest dry wine classification, offering a collector-worthy expression that still remains remarkably approachable in its youth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Abtsberg GG typically shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with green reflections, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose is refined and layered: ripe green and yellow apple, white peach and apricot are interwoven with hints of citrus zest, crushed slate, and a whisper of herbal and floral notes—think meadow flowers, lemon balm, and a faint smokiness from the mineral-rich soils. Subtle, creamy undertones and a touch of exotic nuance, like fresh coconut or light yoghurt notes, may appear as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, expect a dry, tightly structured Riesling with a fine, yet concentrated core of fruit. Ripe orchard fruits and stone fruit sit atop a firm backbone of acidity that feels both juicy and precise, giving the wine a mouthwatering, linear drive. The Abtsberg’s classic cool-climate finesse balances an almost silken texture, with a slight creaminess that rounds out the mid-palate without ever feeling heavy. The finish is long, saline, and mineral, with lingering citrus, stone fruit and a chalky-slate grip. While already enjoyable young for its purity and openness, this 2023 GG has excellent aging potential; stored well, it should evolve beautifully over 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity, spice, and honeyed nuances with time.

Production
The Abtsberg vineyard is one of the crown jewels of the Ruwer valley, a steep, south- to southwest-facing slope rooted in weathered grey and blue Devonian slate. This poor, stony soil, combined with the cool, marginal climate of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, yields low natural yields and grapes of great aromatic intensity and tension. Harvesting for the Abtsberg Großes Gewächs is done by hand, often in multiple passes, to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling berries are selected. In the cellar, Maximin Grünhaus traditionally ferments its top wines with indigenous yeasts, often in large old oak casks (Fuder) or temperature-controlled stainless steel, allowing a slow, gentle fermentation that preserves nuance and site expression. The wine then rests on its fine lees to build texture and complexity before being bottled as a dry Großes Gewächs with minimal intervention, highlighting the purity of the vineyard and vintage.

Food & Serving
This Abtsberg GG is a brilliantly versatile food wine, pairing especially well with refined, subtly aromatic dishes. Think poached or grilled sea bass, turbot, or trout, shellfish (scallops, crab, lobster), sushi and sashimi, as well as fine poultry such as roast chicken or guinea fowl with light jus. It also shines alongside veal, pork tenderloin, or dishes with delicate cream sauces, and can be superb with lightly spiced Asian cuisine—particularly dishes with ginger, citrus, or lemongrass. Serve at 9–11 °C to emphasize precision and freshness; a slightly warmer temperature will bring out more texture and complexity. Young bottles benefit from a brief decant of 30–60 minutes to allow the aromatics to unfurl, especially if served in premium white wine or Riesling-specific glassware.

Producer
Maximin Grünhaus – Weingut der Familie von Schubert is one of Germany’s most historic and revered Riesling estates, with documented viticulture on the Grünhaus site dating back well over a thousand years. Situated along the tiny Ruwer tributary of the Mosel, the estate’s monopole vineyards—Abtsberg, Herrenberg, and Bruderberg—have long been celebrated for producing some of the country’s most distinctive and long-lived Rieslings. Under the stewardship of the von Schubert family, Maximin Grünhaus has played a key role in shaping the reputation of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer for finely etched, terroir-driven wines, and is a respected member of the VDP, Germany’s leading association of top estates. The winery’s Abtsberg Großes Gewächs is regularly cited by critics and collectors as a benchmark dry Riesling, confirming Maximin Grünhaus’ status as a reference producer in the region.
