Description
Maxime-François Laurent Côtes du Rhône La Rubiconde 2022 is a vibrant, organically farmed red from the southern Rhône, crafted under the Gramenon umbrella. It offers all the generosity of Grenache in a fresher, more delicate style that’s easy to drink yet quietly complex. This cuvée has become a reference for authentic, low-intervention Côtes du Rhône that speaks clearly of its place and vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Rubiconde 2022 shows a bright, translucent ruby hue with a youthful purple rim, hinting at its energy and freshness. The nose is expressive and pure, with aromas of wild strawberries, red cherries and raspberries layered over notes of crushed violets, garrigue herbs, white pepper and a faint hint of licorice.
On the palate, it is supple and juicy, medium-bodied with silky tannins and a vibrant, mouth-watering acidity that keeps the wine lively from start to finish. Flavors of fresh red berries and pomegranate are joined by subtle spice, dried herbs and a touch of blood orange zest, giving lift and detail. The finish is clean and delicately savory rather than heavy or sweet, making it exceptionally drinkable. Enjoy it now for its exuberant fruit, but it will evolve nicely over the next 3–5 years, gaining a little more depth and harmony in bottle.
Production
La Rubiconde is sourced from organically farmed vineyards in the southern Rhône Valley, where stony, limestone-influenced soils and plenty of sunlight give Grenache both ripeness and aromatic lift. The vines are tended by hand, with low yields and great attention to biodiversity, following the natural, low-input philosophy long championed by Gramenon. Harvest is done manually at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting to retain only the healthiest bunches. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place with indigenous yeasts and a high proportion of whole clusters to preserve freshness and structure, in concrete or neutral vessels that do not mark the wine with oak. Minimal sulfur is used, if at all, and the wine is bottled without heavy filtration to keep its texture and character intact.
Food & Serving
This Côtes du Rhône is extremely versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with charcuterie, grilled lamb chops, roast chicken with herbs, pork tenderloin, ratatouille, Mediterranean vegetable tarts and simple pastas with tomato or olive-based sauces. Slightly chilled (around 14–16°C / 57–61°F) it works wonderfully with lighter dishes and casual aperitif spreads. Decanting is optional but a brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe will help the aromatics open up, especially in the first year or two after release.
Producer
Maxime-François Laurent is the son of Michèle Aubéry-Laurent, the force behind the famed Domaine Gramenon, one of the benchmark natural wine producers of the southern Rhône. Working under his own label while sharing vineyards and philosophy with Gramenon, Maxime focuses on expressive, terroir-driven bottlings that highlight the finesse and purity of Grenache and its Rhône companions. From their base in the northeastern part of the southern Rhône, they have helped redefine what Côtes du Rhône can be—lively, elegant and full of character—earning a loyal following among sommeliers and enthusiasts for their commitment to organic farming, low-intervention winemaking and consistently distinctive wines.
