Matsu, El Viejo 2022

Matsu El Viejo 2022 is the most mature expression in Vintae’s celebrated Matsu trilogy, crafted from ancient Tinto de Toro vines in Spain’s Toro region. Built on patience, sustainability, and respect for the land, it combines the intensity of old-vine fruit with the elegance of careful, biodynamic-inspired winemaking.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the deep, dark colour you’d expect from Toro, with excellent concentration and depth. The nose opens with ripe black fruit, spice, and toasted oak, followed by earthy, savoury nuances that reflect the age of the vines and the character of the region. On the palate, it is powerful yet polished, with layers of dark berries, plum, wood spice, and a firm, structured backbone. The texture is rich and broad, but balanced by freshness and precision, giving the wine impressive length. Thanks to its concentration and tannic structure, Matsu El Viejo 2022 has very good aging potential.

Production
Matsu El Viejo comes from old vineyards in Toro, a historic wine region northwest of Madrid along the Duero River, where hot days and cool nights help produce deeply flavoured, full-bodied wines. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand during the first 15 days of October, once they reach full ripeness, and then gently pressed in a pneumatic press. Fermentation takes place naturally in small concrete tanks, preserving the purity of the fruit and the identity of the terroir. The wine is then aged for 16 months in new French oak barrels and bottled unfiltered to maintain its natural character and authenticity.

Food & Serving
This is a wine built for hearty dishes: think roasted lamb, slow-cooked beef, game, grilled meats, and rich stews. It also pairs beautifully with mature cheeses after dinner. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for about 1 hour if possible to let the wine fully open up.

The trilogy reflects three generations of winemakers, with El Viejo representing the oldest and most established generation. The wines have earned strong national and international recognition for their quality, authenticity, and commitment to nature.
